Overview

Nkwichi Lodge is set on a beautiful white beach in the Mozambican section of Lake Malawi (known in Mozambique as Lake Niassa). There are no roads within 10 miles of the lodge which helps create a feeling of remoteness and tranquillity. Built to blend in with the surrounding scenery, the double storey building has expansive views over the lake. It's up to you how much or how little you do in a day - you can swim, snorkel, sail, canoe, explore the surrounding Manda Game Reserve and visit local villages and community projects.

The lake's fresh water is crystal-clear and contains a greater variety of indigenous fish species than any other lake in the world. After a morning's activities you can always return to the beach to relax, sunbathe and read a good book. Nkwichi prides itself on practising responsible methods of tourism development and is committed to protecting the environment and community development. Consequently, the lodge has won numerous awards for its philosophy and dedication to quality service.

Rooms

Standard Chalet

Each of the six chalets at Nkwichi Lodge has been discretely tucked into the treeline to preserve the natural setting and keep each chalet private from the next. Each chalet is unique and incorporates the surrounding trees and rocks into its design.

The luxuriously rustic chalets include a romantic four-poster bed draped in mosquito netting, electric lighting each evening, and an en suite bathroom designed so that you can bathe outside under the tree canopy in complete privacy. All the bathrooms have showers hung from overhanging branches with hot and cold running water and some of the bathtubs have been carved from the natural rock.

Out in front of the chalets is a thatch-covered veranda with comfortable armchairs and hammocks to relax in.

Other room types:

For a private and exclusive experience for your family or group of friends, stay in either of the two Nkwichi Houses. Makolo House, with its high thatched ceilings and upstairs platform, has two en suite bedrooms and private access to the lake for swimming.

The Songea House and Chalet is set in a beautiful position overlooking the lake and a private cove. Socialising happens in the sunken lounge and open dining area while accommodation is provided in an upstairs room with its own balcony with views of the lake as well as in a separate chalet with an en suite bathroom.

Facilities

The rustic main lodge has a downstairs seating area with a small library and locally made crafts for sale.

Upstairs and boasting superb views of Lake Niassa is another comfortable seating area, the dining room and main bar.

The deck on the lake shore is a peaceful place for meals, sundowners and just hanging around in a hammock on a lazy afternoon.

More active guests could borrow snorkelling equipment from the shaded 'chitenje' on the beach; paddle out onto the lake in one of the Canadian-style canoes; or sail away to a deserted beach on Nkwichi’s private dhow.

Dining

The Lakeshore Deck is a popular place to have breakfast each morning, where you can enjoy fresh mangoes under the shade of the enormous fig tree while gazing out across the blue water.

You can enjoy dinner on the beach, under the stars, or you may prefer to dine in the privacy of your chalet.

Dinner is a moveable feast and each night you dine in a different location. Lunches can be served in the lodge’s dining area overlooking the lake, or collect a delicious packed lunch for a picnic on a deserted beach or pretty spot. Nkwichi Lodge has one of Africa's most impressive 'kitchen gardens'.

The Manda Wilderness Horticultural Project on the neighbouring farm is run by the Manda Wilderness Conservation Project. Local farmers have learnt how to grow fresh fruit, vegetables and other food to supply the lodge with produce each day.

"Was great, although it took us a while to get used to sleeping in the open air and coping with unwelcome "visitors" in the night. But it was truly a great experience!"
