Thorntree still offers exceptional service from a wonderful team, the trees have grown beautifully since I was last there for the opening to provide pools of shade and the riverfront views from the communal deck or your own suite provide a welcome respite after a busy safari, still one of my favourite lodges in Africa! We also spent a morning in Maunga Village, helping with the school feeding program and to paint the newly built ablutions & renovated classrooms which was such a privilege!
Your journey begins at Livingstone Airport in Zambia where, after touching down, you will be warmly greeted and transferred to Thorntree River Lodge. This beautiful and contemporary lodge is built right on the edge of the Zambezi River and is just a short drive from Victoria Falls. Activities include visits to the Falls, guided nature walks, rhino trekking on foot and game drives in the national park, cultural village visits, sunset river cruises and fishing. Great to combine with sister lodge in Khwai for a much more varied safari and location experience. It’s truely an authentic and natural safari experience perfect for multigenerational families, couples and friends alike.
In the morning of your fourth day in Africa you will bid farewell to the Zambezi River and begin your journey to Botswana, long renowned for gorgeous scenery, incredible birdlife and plenty of predators. A road transfer takes you to Kasane Airport where you will board a flight to the Chobe Enclave – a game-rich area of Botswana positioned between Chobe National Park and the Linyanti swamps. On landing at the airstrip, a friendly welcome awaits, and you will be whisked away to your second destination, Linyanti Ebony. Check into a spacious tented suite that comfortably sleeps a family of four in a double and twin beds.
This authentic and down-to-earth safari camp is built on raised decks overlooking the Linyanti marshlands and river, and an intimate dining and lounge area invites you to spend tranquil evenings enjoying the views around a central fire, wholesome meals and stories of the African bush. The Linyanti region is known for its wide, permanent rivers lined with hippos and crocodiles, vast floodplains, excellent bird watching, and diverse wildlife including all the big cats as well as rare wild dog. During your stay you can look forward to game drives, guided nature walks, boating and catch-and-release fishing. Mokoro (canoe) safaris are available when water levels permit, and between April and November each guest is treated to a half-hour helicopter flight, allowing a new appreciation of this pristine ecosystem from the air.

Very nice lodge and room: only mosquito net, not closed window so very cold in the morning. Breakfast standing around the fire 👍 . Great contact with staff and between guests (16 guests for 25 staff). African evening with songs in their outside restaurant with all guests at the same table. Bush walk very interesting 👍. Mokoro experience so peaceful & nice because so different from a safari in jeep 👍
After three nights at Linyanti Ebony you will move into Botswana’s best-known landscape, the great Okavango Delta, set within Moremi Game Reserve. Travelling to the Delta, a scheduled light aircraft flight takes you from Linyanti to the eastern border of Moremi. Observe how the landscape changes from savannah to lush forests and wetlands that surround the Delta. Landing at Khwai Airstrip, you will then transfer to the lagoon-side Khwai Leadwood.
Located on the unfenced border between the Moremi and a private community area, you are able to enjoy the best of both worlds – access to the vast Moremi on day game drives, as well as the opportunity to enjoy additional activities on the private conservancy such as off-road driving, tracking elusive species on night drives, and exploring the mopane woodlands, grasslands and river banks on guided nature walks. Mokoro safaris are available when water levels are up, and tours of the nearby village allow you to connect with local life and culture.
The Khwai area is known for having some of the best game viewing in the Okavango Delta, and it is a place where the community lives peacefully alongside wildlife under a system of eco-travel and sustainable development. The camp uses solar-powered energy and employs sustainable water usage. As a small tented camp, it is ideal for intimate family vacations. Suites have en suite bathrooms and lovely lagoon views. rnrnIf time permits, on your last morning in Botswana you will wake up for a final early-morning safari activity. After a full breakfast you will depart for Khwai River Airstrip and hop on a short flight to Maun International Airport.
