Overview

This 12-day romantic safari is set in the birthplace of safari travel, Tanzania, and features all the big game action of the Nyerere National Park (Selous) balanced with rest and relaxation on the idyllic island of Pemba.

Nyerere is the world’s largest reserve; you’ll spend 5 days exploring its rugged, big sky landscape on game drives and walking safaris in the care of professional guides. Wildlife is most active during the cool of dawn and dusk, leaving you free during the heat of the day to dip into the infinity pool overlooking the Great Ruaha River, or treat yourself to one of the nurturing spa treatments on offer.

A charter flight whisks you across the balmy waters of the Indian Ocean to Pemba Island, where a boat transfer delivers you to the barefoot luxury of Fundu Lagoon. Your home for the next 7 days, Fundu is set on a private beach in one of the world’s top 5 diving destinations. Snorkel and dive the reefs, indulge in spa treatments or a range of water sports – relaxed Fundu is the ideal vacation combination for action-packed Nyerere, blending peace and quiet with exceptional natural beauty.

I love this combination for anyone wanting a luxury, remote and off the beaten travel experience. Don’t rush off, but relax and really soak up the experience in both the Selous for your combination activity experiences and Pemba Island for your beach break.

Day 1-4: The heart of Selous

Nyerere, Tanzania
Detailed breakdown

Day 1-4: The heart of Selous | 4 Nights

Up arrow
Nyerere, Tanzania

Arrive in Dar es Salaam and catch a charter flight transfer to the Selous, the world’s largest reserve and Tanzania’s best kept Big 5 secret. Translating to ‘the heart of Selous’, Roho ya Selous offers an authentic safari experience that balances comfort and adventure. Positioned perfectly on a small peninsula overlooking the water, the camp is immersed in diverse habitats that offer an array of flora and fauna encounters, as well as close-up views of the Big 5. Roho ya Selous lies in the middle of Selous Game Reserve’s photographic centre. The camp offers modified photography vehicles and expert drivers that specifically tailor the game drive around getting you that perfect shot.

Big game is Tanzania’s big draw card and the Selous is home to a rich diversity of Africa’s most popular species, including prides of lion, breeding herds of elephant, black rhino, cheetah, packs of wild dog and giraffe. Humanity has left this vast sanctuary relatively undisturbed, and the Selous is one of Africa’s secret gems, so expect crowd-free game viewing and an authentic safari atmosphere.

You can also explore on guided nature walks, which are tailored to your fitness and comfort levels – we highly recommended exploring on foot out in the care of professional guides. It is the most intimate and detailed way to encounter the wild. Or be transported above the clouds in a hot-air balloon, viewing the wildlife and ever-changing landscape from a bird’s-eye view.

Day 5-10: At Fundu Lagoon on Pemba Island | 5 Nights

Up arrow
Pemba Island, Tanzania

A charter flight carries you from the Selous to Dar es Salaam and onwards from there to Chake Chake Airport on Pemba Island. A speedboat transfer whisks you from the airport to Fundu Lagoon, your barefoot paradise for the next 5 nights.

As famous for its private beach as its warm service and superb food and wine, Fundu’s hillside suites are tucked into the tropical forest looking out over a classic Indian Ocean view. This is one of the world’s top 5 diving destinations, but it remains a crowd-free hideaway thanks to the private beach and boat-only accessibility. Be as active or as restful as you like – there are plenty of water sports and excursions on offer together with revitalising spa treatments.

The fully equipped PADI dive centre offers snorkeling and scuba diving in the teeming coral lagoons, alongside waterskiing, windsurfing, fishing and sunset dhow cruises. Explore Misali island and the Ngezi Forest, stretch away your stress surrounded by natural beauty on the yoga platform or simply soak up the sun at the infinity pool.

When it is time to return home, you’ll be utterly rested, sun kissed and thrilled with the memories you have made. What stories will you have to tell? Perhaps an encounter with elephants or watching lion cubs at play, toasting a magnificent sunset over delicious cocktails, or walking along a perfect tropical beach, hand-in-hand with the one you love?
