Overview of Chitwa Chitwa Game Lodge

South Africa, Kruger Private Reserves, Kruger National Park

Situated in the exclusive Sabi Sand Game Reserve, Chitwa Chitwa Game Lodge overlooks one of the reserve’s largest lakes where wildlife is often observed having an early morning or evening drink. The lodge has been built into the surrounding environment making it almost invisible to the wildlife gathering at the nearby lake thus giving you an unparalleled game viewing experience right from the lodge itself.

Morning and evening game drives are conducted in an open Land Rover in the company of a professional guide. Optional guided walking safaris are also offered. Visit Dixie, a small Shangaan village, for a special opportunity to meet the local people and learn more about their African customs and way of life. Relax between wildlife-viewing experiences in the lodge’s library where you can read up on the species you may have spotted. After a day of adventure, indulge in an authentic African massage in the privacy of your suite.

The location of this lodge is spectacular with views over a nearby waterhole. We experienced a herd of about 20 elephants swimming and playing in the water, a really special experience!

Chitwa Chitwa was so much more than we could have imagined!! Everything from the service and the meals at the lodge to the game drives were fantastic. The room and deck were great for afternoon downtime. Just sitting and watching the animals come down to the lake for a drink was such a great experience.

The game drives cannot be described in words! We saw all of the Big Five in one day. Every drive was a different experience. We also had two rare sightings – a cheetah and a mama leopard and baby, which our tracker located by sighting its tiny paw print in the dirt along the road. Thank you for steering us in the right direction.

One of the big highlights Chitwa Chitwa lodge was our room. We were able to watch the animals in their habitat while we sat on the deck. It was marvelous. We saw four of the big five and other large animals. One time, two leopards interacted, killed a warthog for lunch. We asked to go here opposed to the Serengeti because we wanted to get closer to the animals. Well, they walked right up to the truck to the point it was a little unnerving. It was fantastic. We could go on and on with our experience.

Chitwa Chitwa was very welcoming, the staff were excellent as were the food and the game drives. The only criticism was that the fabric of the lodge felt quite tired, the bathroom in particular was quite old and in need of a refurb.

Chitwa Chitwa – Amazing experience here. Claudia and Leon were great managers and always around in case you needed anything. Claudia even arranged for us to visit the Hodespruit endagered species center on our way to the airport. We really enjoyed the experiences provided here, and Chitwa went above and beyond: we were provided with a private “honeymoon meal” one night with complimentary sparkling wine, the staff covered our room in rose petals, candles and drew a bubble bath one night, on another night we were seated with two other couples from different countries, and on another night the lodge hosted a traditional brai and we were even provided traditional Afrtican attire. We really liked all of the attention to detail they had. The only thing we found a little odd was the decor – there were a ton of bones. Our guide Neil was also very good.
Chitwa, although a little cluttered with African artifacts , felt warmer and made us feel like we were participating in a fun adventure as opposed to merely staying in a very fancy location. Chitwa the sightings seemed to be more interesting, we saw four leopards and only a few giraffes and wildebeest at Sabi Sands (Chitwa).
