Hidden away in a private game concession, Hyena Pan Tented Camp is a good choice for travellers looking for an exclusive safari on the fringes of the teeming Okavango Delta. The camp lies in the Khwai River area, a famously game-rich region bordering the Moremi Game Reserve and year-round home to elephant, buffalo, hippo as well as big cats, wild dogs and, of course, the ubiquitous spotted hyena. Such a location means you can explore both the 350 000 hectare private conservancy and the Moremi on game drives, as well as enjoying activities in the concession such as spot-lit night drives and guided bush walks that are not permitted in Moremi.
Hyena Pan Tented Camp is a small and intimate accommodation consisting of only eight tented suites, each with their own private bathroom. It is a relatively simple camp but comfortable and well designed; children over eight years old are welcome at camp although there are no specific facilities for them.
The emphasis at Hyena Pan is on flexibility and diversity – you can spend the whole day in Moremi (complete with a packed lunch), spend time observing wildlife close-up from the vantage of the camp’s ground-level photographic hide, or go bird watching on foot with an expert guide. One highlight is a night away from camp on a ‘sky bed’, an elevated and luxurious sleeping platform set over water, making for an unforgettable experience in Africa.
