A private setting in Zambezi National Park means Mpala Jena Camp offers a very different Victoria Falls experience. You have access to all the activities and attractions of Victoria Falls – which lies less than 90 minutes’ drive away – and stay in tented suites that sit under giant riverside trees and look out over the untamed Zambezi River. Hippo snort in the water, wildlife occasionally wanders through camp and the ubiquitous cry of the African fish eagle provides the soundtrack to your Zimbabwean safari.

Named after the stream that runs through camp – itself named for a legendary ‘white impala’ antelope – Mpala Jena has taken care to leave a light footprint on this pristine environment. Constructed from recycled hardwoods and sturdy canvas, the camp runs on solar power and offers Wi-Fi, gourmet dishes and a well-stocked wine cellar. Morning and afternoon game drives with professional guides take you in search of the heavyweight species like elephant, buffalo, giraffe, lions and spotted hyenas. Boat cruises, walking safaris and canoe adventures are also offered, adding more exciting aspects to your game viewing experience.

Open year round and recommended for travellers looking to visit Victoria Falls within a genuine safari environment, Mpala Jena welcomes families with children aged six and over. It also takes care to provide for couples and honeymooners as well as groups of friends travelling together: not only is each of its four suites very private and complete with its own lounge, sun deck and plunge pool but the camp offers a 2-bedroom luxury suite too.

Guest Tent

There are four regular suites at Mpala Jena, each enjoying a private riverside setting with views over the Zambezi. Made of canvas and hardwood in a safari style with Moroccan touches, each suite has a large double bed under netting as well as a lounge area and en suite bathroom with bathtub, shower and double basins as well as a separate toilet. The interior is light and breezy, thanks to its open – but insect-proofed – design and it is kept cool by overhead fan and an air-conditioning circulation system. There is electric light in each tent as well as Wi-Fi and recharging points for batteries. A nice touch is the yoga mat, provided in each suite along with weights and bands if you feel like a workout in your tent.

Step outside and you find a wooden deck with a pair of comfortable chairs and table plus unspoilt Zambezi River views. A private plunge pool completes the picture.

Other room type

Set on the edge of camp, the Mpala Jena Suite is a 2-bedroom, 2-bathroom accommodation with central lounge and dining area as well as large outdoor wooden deck with plunge pool and sun loungers. Equally a home for families or for two couples, the Mpala Jena Suite sleeps four adults or a party of five if there are children travelling with two parents.

Set next to the stream that entices so much wildlife to the area, Mpala Jena’s main camp lies in a central location with two suites on either side of it. Within its canvas walls you will find the well-furnished lounge as well as the library and indoor dining area, a safari shop and a convenient tea-and-coffee station. A massage service – enjoyed in the privacy of your suite – is offered and there is a complimentary laundry service.

Running a fun and informative interactive kitchen, Mpala Jena offers three delicious meals a day and is very flexible about when and where they are served. You may find breakfast or lunch – or both – served outdoors under a thorn tree or next to the river. Evening dinners are more sophisticated, made up of three courses and served a la carte, at communal or individual tables – as you prefer.

Complete with wine cellar, the camp is able to cater for all dietary requirements – including vegan and children’s menus - as long as they are requested in advance.
