Overview

Built on a bend of the Zambezi River, this ‘tree-fort’ safari lodge is set within the Mosi-oa-Tunya Park upstream from the iconic Victoria Falls. Built into the canopy of giant ebony and jackalberry trees alongside sweeping phoenix palms, 12 cosy chalets on stilts overlooking the mighty river are connected by wooden walkways that boast inspiring vistas of the passing river that teems with hippo and bream.

Named after Dr David Livingstone’s knowledgeable local guides, Sussi & Chuma is a laid-back lodge where you can spend your days slowing down the pace with a visit to Mosi-oa-Tunya Park - which is home to white rhino - or a cruise or paddle down the river. If the Victoria Falls are running high, put on a rain mac and surround yourself with the incredible mist and bright rainbow formed by the crashing cascade of water. You can also undertake guided nature walks with an armed ranger. Be sure to visit the local empowerment project where you can learn how the local women make jewellery from recycled glass and even rent a bike from a local to take a look at the village.

Each guest chalet is raised on a wooden deck within a group of mature trees along the riverbank, ensuring views of the Zambezi and the wildlife that depend on it – keep a look out for inquisitive monkeys in the branches or small antelope coming down to drink at sunrise. Relax even further at the fully equipped spa, which has hydrotherapy facilities and makes use of certified African ingredients like soothing rooibos (red bush tea), marula, African potato and aloe ferox.

Highlights

  • Dine overlooking the Zambezi and its resident hippo pods
  • Fully equipped bush spa to relax in after a long safari

  • Enjoy sundowners on a sunset boat cruise
  • Inspiring visits to local businesses empowered by the lodge

Rooms

Treehouse

Tree-forts are built into the canopy of giant ebony trees lining the riverbank of the Zambezi. Decorated in earthy tones with comfortable furnishings, each room is en suite with a shower and bath. A private viewing deck provides superb views of the Zambezi’s white waters and the ideal place to get up close to monkeys in the trees and hear hippos cavorting below. Chalets have air conditioning and beds are furnished with electric blankets to ward off the chill in winter.

Facilities

Split over two levels, the main lodge area comprises a bar, lounge and open-air dining area overlooking the gorgeous Zambezi River and its resident hippo pods. Two fire pits on either side of the viewing deck give a lovely ambiance to this communal area where tales of the bush are often shared among guests.

The fully equipped little spa offers pampering massages as well as beauty treatments that include hydrotherapy and signature Africology amenities. Sunset boat cruises gliding down the Zambezi River are a spectacular way to discover wildlife from the water and make a toast to wildest Africa.

Sussi & Chuma offers walking safaris and an established philanthropy project at Nakatindi Village echoes their commitment to Pack with a Purpose, which encourages visitors to include school and other supplies in their baggage to distribute to local children.

Dining

Meals are prepared by a team of chefs and enjoyed al fresco on the deck, in secluded pods, or inside the dining area away from monkeys. Combining local and international flavours, chefs serve up intriguing dishes such as crocodile curry and impala stew.

Sussi & Chuma is a very nice lodge in a picturesque setting on the Zambesi river. There are 12 'huts' built on stilts. Each of the huts is quite modern on the inside, with a beautiful canopy bed with mosquito netting, a separate toilet area, a shower , a tub, and a deck overlooking the river. Very comfortable. There is a bar and sitting area behind the reception area, and below is the main dining area. Closer to the river there is a deck where they serve drinks and snacks around a nice fire at sunset. There are several activities offered during there day - game drives, boat cruises, canoeing, nature walks, guided tour of the Victoria falls from the Zambian side, fishing, etc. You are generally allowed two activities each day. Many additional activities are available in Livingstone for an additional charge. The staff tries very hard to give you a top-notch experience. We spent two lovely nights here, and enjoyed our visit to the Victoria Falls, as well as the game drives. The staff went out of their way to meet all of our wishes

With regards to the accomodations, all your recommendations were perfect! Our stay at Sussi & Chuma was like staying with family and Rachael, Simon and Junior made sure we were ready for all our activities on time, even so much as to arrange for brea kfast at our treehouse so that we would not have to feel rushed by getting up early for the elephant safari. We fell in love with them and the rest of the staff at Sussi & Chuma.

It was the right call to have 3 nights at the Sussi & Chuma Lodge, as by the time we arrived we had been travelling for about 20 hrs since leaving home in the UK. So by the time we had arrived we were very happy to have the remainder of this day just relaxing and enjoying the surroundings etc. For the following two days here we were then refreshed and happy to do all the activities that were offered. Having just two more nights was perfect as we did all that was on offer, and if we stayed any longer we would have either been repeating safari trips or sitting around in the sunshine. The staff here were extremely friendly, helpful and very attentive and we enjoyed the food, lodge and the location very much and you really could not ask for anymore. For the first two nights there was only one other couple staying which meant there were so many staff for so few people, and maybe this had an influence on the service we received. We also had our own guide for all the excursions on a one to one basis which was lovely and we struck up a good relationship with him, also it was nice to have him take us to border when we left the lodge to head to Chobe.

It was an absolutely charming place and I wished we could have stayed there longer. I can't imagine to be in a better place for our anniversary. The staff were the nicest people we ever met. Also the location is extraordinary, with the fantastic view of the Zambezi. We also loved the food - very good and creative. The staff made their best to make our anniversary evening memorable - I can't imagine a better place to be for that date.

We really enjoyed the Sussi & Chuma lodge. The accomodations, food and service were all top-notch. I would highly recommend this place to anyone. Although the game viewing wasn't the main focus, we saw a lot of great animals, including the white rhin o, which was quite a treat.

"The Sussi & Chuma tree house was great. The tree houses were huge and very spacious. There was no electric fence separating the river from the property. We had a wild elephant visit us for one day. Lots of hippos on the river."

Sussi & Chuma was outstanding. Top class. The wine was excellent. There were menu options for each meal, and they were all great. The meat and vegetarian dishes were both beautiful and delicious. The desserts were heavenly. I tried crocodile for the first time, and it was quite good. The lodge was clean. The service was top-notch, with every staff member introducing themselves to us. The air conditioner in the room was a nice touch. The guides were extremely knowledgeable and friendly. The manager, Juliet, was knowledgeable, welcoming, warm, and friendly. We were surprised with rose petals spelled out into "LOVE" on the floor of our room with a suprisingly nice bottle of champagne for our honeymoon. We got breakfast cooked for us on the island for our sunrise cruise, which was also a surprise. We were served tray-pass hors d'oeuvres every night after our evening activity and prior to dinner. Five stars!
