Overview of Sanctuary Sussi & Chuma

Zambia, Zambezi River, Victoria Falls

Built on a bend of the Zambezi River, this ‘tree-fort' safari lodge is set within the Mosi-oa-Tunya Park upstream from the iconic Victoria Falls. Built into the canopy of giant ebony and jackalberry trees alongside sweeping phoenix palms, 12 cosy chalets on stilts overlooking the mighty river are connected by wooden walkways that boast inspiring vistas of the passing river that teems with hippo and bream.

Named after Dr David Livingstone's knowledgeable local guides, Sussi & Chuma is a laid-back lodge where you can spend your days slowing down the pace with a visit to Mosi-oa-Tunya Park – which is home to white rhino – or a cruise or paddle down the river. If the Victoria Falls are running high, put on a rain mac and surround yourself with the incredible mist and bright rainbow formed by the crashing cascade of water. You can also undertake guided nature walks with an armed ranger. Be sure to visit the local empowerment project where you can learn how the local women make jewellery from recycled glass and even rent a bike from a local to take a look at the village.

Each guest chalet is raised on a wooden deck within a group of mature trees along the riverbank, ensuring views of the Zambezi and the wildlife that depend on it – keep a look out for inquisitive monkeys in the branches or small antelope coming down to drink at sunrise. Relax even further at the fully equipped spa, which has hydrotherapy facilities and makes use of certified African ingredients like soothing rooibos (red bush tea), marula, African potato and aloe ferox.

Make a Positive Impact Through Travel

Sanctuary Retreats selects projects based on their potential to create long-lasting relationships with the communities in the areas in which they operate. Their goal is to identify and sponsor long-term, viable and self-sustaining projects that will have the support of the staff and visitors. The projects are all collaborative and include Safe Water for Schools, Chipego Bike Shop, Beads & Business, and Nakatindi Village and School. They work closely with the local communities to determine their needs and improve their well-being.

We arrived in an open-air jeep from the border (we wish we had known so Kelli could have put her hair up and we would have had a small US$ bill ready to tip the driver.) The staff greeted us very warmly and gave us lots of info. The round “tree house” room was very unique and fun. We loved the food here, (very gourmet-like, much better portion size compared to Notten’s) and the outdoor Tiki bar! The very best part was the evening boat tours to look for animals. Thank goodness our guide Junior took us to Victoria Falls, shopping and touring a village early before the day got too hot! We had a lot of fun taking a boat up and down the Zambezi and through some rapids! Also, there were very FEW other boats around us. We’ll need to come back and see it when the Zambezi is high.

I loved watching the stars from the firepit on the intimate deck, listening for hippo. Sussi & Chuma has a cosy ambience with a traditional safari lodge feel, most of the local staff have been there for decades and have wonderful stories to share. A highlight was a visit to the local Nakatindi village female entrepreneurship projects of Chipego Bike Shop & Sishemo Beads, so inspiring!

Set on the banks of the mighty Zambezi, this lodge offers a treetop feel amongst the trees with a partial view overlooking the river. The lodge itself offers well appointed, luxury rooms, gorgeous views from the main lodge area and absolutely delicious food with the option to try local delicacies. The sunset cruise is a must do where elephants, crocodiles, hippo's and many bird species can be witnessed. Enjoy a game drive as well as a bush walk where you can witness numerous game species. Having no predators means an abundance of plains game species.
