Sand River Sealous Lodge – (5 STAR rating)
Landed and my driver asked what animals I hadn't seen yet. I told him I had seen the Big 5 and just wanted to see wild dogs. It was a 2 and a 1/2-hour drive from the airstrip to the lodge. Within an hour of leaving the airstrip, he had me sitting on 8 wild dogs!

Went fishing in the river and caught a lot of catfish which was an added treat I didn't expect. They have aluminium boats which they take you up the river on. Very interesting dodging the hippos who have a bad habit of popping up when you least expect it. My fishing guide was Deo and he was very knowledgeable about the river and I never felt uneasy with him driving the boat. He was always on the lookout for danger signs and always stayed well clear of the hippos and crocs.

Lots of hippos and crocs in the river. Saw a big pride of 12-15 lions lying in a dry riverbed right next to the road. Cute part of that was a young 1/3 grown lion cub got up and walked over to a big-maned male lion that was lying there. The cub just flopped down on the male’s mane and started rubbing against him. The male just kind of looked up at him and put his head back down.

My room was awesome and the staff were very attentive. Food was great including fresh catfish. Definitely would come back here.

Unbeatable location on the edge of the Rufiji River, and in a remote area of the Nyerere National Park. The lodge and suites appear rustic from the outside, but the interiors of the open air rooms and main area are beautifully appointed in a minimalist but luxurious manner.

Along with game drives and walking safaris, one can enjoy boating and fishing (tiger fish in season), as well as fly-camping. A boat trip to the scenic Stieglars Gorge is not to be missed.

The camp really embraced us with their family-like atmosphere. On the first night in Selous, a female lion came straight for our door with those loud calling noises only a lion can produce!
