I was born and raised on the outskirts of Nairobi, Kenya's capital city, in the suburb of Karen. I went on my first safari at eight months old and have never looked back – safari and travel are in my blood. It's my hope that all my clients feel the same way about Africa and safaris as I do when they return home. In the past, I've managed lodges, qualified as a professional private guide, and even worked on superyachts around the world. Now, my job at Go2Africa is to help people’s travel dreams come true. I am passionate about sharing my knowledge and would love to help more people learn about, and travel to, Africa.
This takes me back to Lentorre Lodge when I was chatting to a guide about an odd-looking animal that ran past my room the night before being interrupted by a loud bark. We, along with a few clients, took the vehicle to check it out and saw an area scuffed up with blood. While taking a closer look a client yelled “leopard!” and we looked up to see a leopard in a tree nearby. The clients wanted to get their travelling companions and better cameras, so we drove off to grab them and as we rounded a tree, we were stopped by wild dogs on the road, a species that had not been seen in the area for 2 to 3 years – a truly incredible morning!
Ol Donyo Lodge offers horse riding, which I helped to organise at the time, and was invited by a couple to join them. We ventured across the open plains for a few hours, and it ended with a beautiful surprise champagne breakfast that we had organised. As we sat down and started being served, the man got down on one knee and proposed. It was a magical experience.
The one thing I have learned from being on so many safaris is that patience is key. Whether on a game drive, sitting by the river, or even while at camp – something is bound to happen, but sometimes you just have to wait a little. Crack open an ice-cold coke or a beer and enjoy what's around you and listen to your guides – often they've grown up in the area and have wonderful knowledge and stories to share. Sit back, relax, and have patience – it may surprise you.
