Overview

Casual elegance and a relaxed atmosphere await guests on the north-west coast of Benguerra Island in the Bazaruto Archipelago: Azura - Mozambique's first luxury eco-boutique retreat. Amazing attention to detail has gone into the construction of this beautiful lodge, giving you a good slice of barefoot luxury at its best. And with its position along an incredible stretch of sand lapped by turquoise waters, Azura offers activities in abundance.

The surrounding ocean forms part of a national park and offers you exceptional snorkelling and scuba-diving. Azura has a gold-rated PADI dive centre and also offers catch-and-release deep sea fishing trips. However, one of the best things to do is absolutely nothing: settle onto the plump cushions shaded by thatched beachside salas and watch dhows sail by on the translucent sea.

Rooms

Beach Villa

Each of the 14 private air-conditioned Beach Villas at Azura is extremely spacious and features a big comfy bed with huge bathroom and an infinity swimming pool looking out over the turquoise Indian Ocean.

The style is beach-chic with beautifully carved furniture and traditional artwork. A few steps away on the soft sand is a thatched sala with a daybed where you can escape the heat of the day with a good book.

Each villa also has its own butler so you can really relax knowing an ice-cold drink is close at hand. And four are interconnecting for a family option.

Facilities

At Azura you can be assured of complete relaxation with daybeds right on your doorstep to while away the heat of the day by taking in the magnificent ocean views.

Enjoy an ice-cold drink from the Star Bar with its high-thatched ceiling hung with paper stars or indulge in a treatment at the spa.

The lodge is also home to a professional, gold-rated dive school for guests who want to explore the legendary coral reefs of this top diving destination.

Dining

Meals at Azura are a real treat and usually feature an abundance of fresh seafood including catch-of-the-day barbecues on the beach.

Tucking into huge prawns and lobster tails with your toes in the sand is an experience not to be forgotten. Lunch is à la carte with a choice of fresh salads and other light meals whereas dinner options are varied.

Choose from any one of the dining venues at Azura: the main restaurant has sprawling ocean views while the Star Bar offers a relaxed atmosphere and the Gecko Deck is a short stroll down the beach. You can also ask for a picnic basket and find a secluded spot for a romantic picnic for two.

To complement your food, the extensive wine cellar includes hand-selected fine wines flown direct from the owner's chateau in France's Loire Valley.

Azura was just what we needed to finish our honeymoon. Total bliss and relaxation. Fresh seafood daily was great. Our personal butler was fantastic. I actually caught a fever for 2 of the days here which put a damper on it for me but my wife loved it . I would say this was a good 2nd choice.

All of the lodging was amazing and your recommendations where spot on! We most certainly want to thank you for your recommendation of Azura Retreats. Both Matt and I said that it is the most beautiful and amazing place that we have ever been. It was truly a trip of a lifetime and we cannot thank you enough for making it happen for us!

We arrived at Mozambique airport to be met by handling staff who looked after us while waiting for our helicopter transfer flight to Benguerra Island. After some time we were given a short briefing and was helped onto the helicopter for our 10 minut es transfer over the breath taking sea. Once we landed we were met and greeted by the Managers of Azura who took us through the grounds of the villas to a warm welcome of drinks and meeting our host/butler (Gregg) for the week. We were shown around and were welcomed by all the staff then our Host/Butler (Gregg) took us to our villa showed us all the facilities and said anything we needed during our stay we were to contact him. Our villa was amazing looking out onto the beach, we had our own infinity pool and garden with sun loungers, table and chairs and Sala at the end of the garden almost on the beach. We had indoor and outdoor showers, and found it lovely waking up and looking out onto the sea while lying in bed. The Island is so peaceful, soft sand, empty beaches, fantastic food, and waited on hand and foot, a true paradise island. There are water trips/activities available and a tour of the island which includes a visit to the school on the island to meet some of the pupils and the teacher, see some of the villages, can climb up the sand dune and may see crocodiles in the fresh water lakes. It is a very safe island where you can walk along the beaches without any hassle. The sea is safe and calm to swim in, where the locals can be seen fishing. Gregg our host really looked after us making our stay a very memorable one he couldn't do enough for us. The room and facilities were kept really clean and quotes/stories were left on our bed at night as a little token. All the staff are friendly, the managers can’t do enough for you, food is fantastic 3/4 courses for breakfast/lunch/dinner, accommodation amazing, and so is the location (Paradise).

Azuna was absolutely stunning and I couldn't have had a better time. It was such a lovely spot and the staff took care of me incredibly well. It was particularly wonderful, as Cape Town was too much fun and by the time I got there, I was a rather bro ken, but happy, man. But after my time relaxing on the beach, scuba diving, fishing and the like in Mozambique, I was like a new man.

Azura was probably the most beautiful place I've ever been to... and I’ve travelled extensively! It was paradise. The luxury villa was real luxury in every sense of the word, the food good, weather fantastic most of the time and the service and staff out of this world.

The Azura resort was great - good lodging, people and food. We also had the opportunity to experience the culture and local life. When we were there is was unusually hot - even for the locals ! Also, the ocean was very rough so we could not fish or scuba dive. Therefore this part of the vacation was more low key and relaxed - which was a good break. Still very enjoyable.
