Overview of DumaTau Camp

Botswana, Linyanti, Chobe National Park

DumaTau is located in the private Linyanti Game Reserve on the western boundary of Botswana's legendary Chobe National Park, home to thousands of Kalahari elephants. Run entirely on solar energy, the intimate 10-tent safari camp is set under a shady grove of mangosteen trees overlooking Osprey lagoon. With the source of the Savuti Channel nearby, game viewing along this animal-rich waterway is outstanding. Elephants congregate in large herds during winter (June to October) and during these dry months plains game such as sable and roan antelope also traverse the lush Linyanti. Several hides in close vicinity of the camp – including one at the source of the Savuti – provide excellent photographic opportunities for guests.

In addition to incredible sighting that can include pangolins, honey badgers, wild dogs and fish eagles, DumaTau offers activities like fishing, canoeing, swimming and relaxing at the fire pit located at the end of the private jetty. All vehicles are open-sided and take a maximum of six passengers, meaning everyone has ‘the best seat in the house'.

A small but well-designed camp, DumaTau will appeal to safari-goers who want excellent food, comfortable accommodation and the chance to see spectacular wildlife encounters. DumaTau runs entirely on solar power and has been built from sustainable timber sources with water-conscious waste removal to lighten its ecological impact as much as possible. Guests are also supplied with reusable water bottles to cut down on the use of plastic bottles.

General Facilities

Raised above the ground to take advantage of the sweeping river vistas, DumaTau's communal area consists of a dining room, lounge and bar, all leading onto an expansive viewing deck. A fire pit at the end of the lagoon jetty makes a picturesque place to keep warm at night or share bush tales with other guests.

The camp's sparkling swimming pool is where you can find welcome relief from the afternoon heat. Aside from twice-daily game drives in a 4×4, you can enjoy guided walking safaris along the Linyanti River and Savuti Channel. Sunset cruises on a pontoon are offered as well as mekoro (based on traditional dugout canoes) trips through the reserve's many beautiful and unspoilt waterways and channels.

This eco-friendly camp runs entirely on solar energy for hot water and lighting, and is built from sustainable timber with ‘green' insulating materials used in its construction. Water-conscious waste removal is also practised on the property. A daily laundry service is available, meaning you can pack light.

Pre-teen and teenage guests will be taken under the wing of their Bush Buddy, who will take them on safe nature walks, teach them traditional African games and lead them on an exciting treasure hunt. Children also receive age-appropriate gifts, magazines and snacks at DumaTau Camp.

DumaTau is a beautiful premiere camp but what really makes the experience extra special is the management team. They have perfected personalized, attentive service while still keeping it light and casual – making you feel like the camp is your home away from home. The food was delicious and the team always made an effort to surprise us.

Traveling in green season (March) does mean that you have to work a bit harder for your sightings, however the guides are extremely knowledgeable and the landscape is breathtaking so you are always kept entertained doing both game drives and boat cruises. We did manage to find a pride of lions, lots of elephants, plains game and witness elephants crossing the river.

Particularly loved the curiosity room and spa/pool area for sunset.

Duma Tau was great. All the staff members were lovely and as for wildlife viewing, this was also brilliant, we saw wild dogs chasing impala, a pride of 13 lions with a fresh kill.
