Greystoke Mahale
Greystoke Mahale is a remote tented camp in the chimp-inhabited forests of the Mahale Mountains in West Tanzania. The camp stands at the base of the densely forested Mahale Mountains National Park on a remote beach and along the shores of Lake Tanganyika. This area is home to the world’s largest known population of chimpanzees. Trek through the rainforest where Mahale’s endangered chimpanzees live, while leopard, bushbuck, bush pig, and a variety of birds and butterflies can also be spotted. The lake, with 250 species of tropical fish, is perfect for snorkelling and fishing, as well as kayaking.
This unique lodge captures the essence of adventure, immersing guests in Africa's untamed wilderness, where hippos patrol the lakes and rainforested mountains rise dramatically from the shores. With its intimate and welcoming atmosphere, Greystoke Mahale feels like a home away from home, offering an unforgettable experience where you will find yourself reluctant to leave.

At Greystoke Mahale, each Banda offers a unique touch of Robinson-Crusoe-style barefoot luxury, nestled amid lush forest greenery with stunning views of the lake and beach. Constructed from reclaimed dhows that once sailed the lake's waters, these treehouse-like A-frame Bandas possess a distinct character, marked by timbers that have weathered many moons on the lake. Their rustic charm harmonizes with the natural surroundings, making each space a serene and inviting retreat.
Back at the camp, unwind on the sandy beach, relax in the thatched Tongwe-style lodge, or enjoy the views from the upper decks.Unwind in the cosy bar, perched on the rocks of the northern headland with stepped decks leading down to the water’s edge.
Bar
Dinners and ice cold cocktails are served in the spacious torch-lit mess tent at the water’s edge, or on a 50-foot mahogany dhow on the waters of Lake Tanganyika. The cosy bar is perched on the rocks of the northern headland with large decks leading down to the water’s edge. Fresh sashimi and iced vodka are served while you soak up the tranquil lake views or marvel at the African night sky.

Greystoke Mahale is a very unique place. Trekking to see the chimps was amazing. The beach, kayaking, fishing and swimming in the lake was excellent.
Possibly the most beautiful and remote wilderness location I have ever stayed at, it was hard to leave! Definitely a place to be on your ‘to see, before I die’ list.
We all agreed that Greystoke Mahale was absolutely the highlight of our trip. Not only is this place situated in a secluded, idyllic setting, but there is so much to do apart from the chimp trekking. It was truly magical – we loved it.
