The quirky and comfortable Kwessi Dunes Lodge combines all the best bits of old- and new-world African elements. High thatched roofs and vintage maps meet swinging hammocks and striped canvas in each of the ten chalets. Found in the striking desert landscape of the NamibRand National Reserve and within arms-reach of famous Sossusvlei, you’re able to explore the vast area by hot-air balloon, quad bike, on foot, horseback or in a classic safari vehicle.
Located deep within NamibRand, Kwessi Dunes places its focus not on chasing after big game, but appreciating the unconventional beauty that the sprawling desert plains, jagged mountains and iconic red dunes have to offer. The harsh climate here has produced some interesting wildlife. Spot unusual creatures like the bat-eared fox as well as antelope, African wild cats and even the odd leopard and cheetah, all of which have adapted to survive in these unforgiving conditions.
Kwessi’s biggest drawcard is its prime location for stargazing. The NamibRand is the only Dark Sky Reserve. It possesses an exceptional quality of starry nights and nocturnal environment, and is one of the least light-polluted areas in the world. The night sky is otherworldly, affording a view of the Milky Way Galaxy that can be found in only a handful of other places around the globe. Each chalet at the lodge features a separate stargazer room where guests can fall asleep under a canopy of stars.
