Set in a grove of ebony trees on the banks of the Luangwa River, Mchenja Camp is a stylish camp situated in the famous South Luangwa National Park, rated as one of the finest wildlife sanctuaries in the world and home to Africa’s best walking safaris. The lodge’s relaxed, intimate luxury makes it an ideal destination for honeymooners.

Visitors often include Mchenja as part of their camp-to-camp walking safari but the camp also functions as a stand-alone accommodation – and there’s plenty to do: the camp offers day and night game drives as well as walking safaris while for your comfort and relaxation, the camp provides a lounge and dining area, small library, bar and shaded plunge pool.

Luxury Tent

Mchenja Camp only has five spacious and luxurious rooms, set under a thatched roof.

Each has been designed with style and comfort in mind and provides guests with their very own open-air, en suite bathroom with bath and outside shower on a deck that looks out over the river and surrounding South Luangwa landscape.

Two Bedroom Family Room

Families can stay close in the Two-Bedroom Family Rondavel. With a king-bedded master room and an additional twin room for two children, it’s the ideal option for a small family to enjoy their safari together. The rooms are connected by a furnished verandah, and each has its own en-suite bathroom. The canvas sides of the tent open up completely to allow the breeze and views in, and can be closed in the evenings or on cooler days, when the weather requires it.

General Facilities

Mchenja Camp provides guests with a comfortable and intimate environment in which to relax and experience Africa’s landscape and wildlife – and with only five tents available, no wonder the camp is popular with honeymooners.

You could chat about the excitement of your game drive or walking safari while relaxing in the lounge, or spend quiet moments reading in the small library nook. Indulge in scrumptuous meals outdoors or indoors, grab a drink from the bar and take a refreshing dip in the plunge pool while listening to the calls of birds and hippos in the river nearby.

    Lovely bush camp, unpretentious and true ‘feel at home’ atmosphere. I loved the authentic thatch and reed structure with the open front giving stunning views of the surroundings. At night you could choose to keep the room open or draw the curtains closed, a truly back-to-nature feel, with a lovely evening breeze. The ensuite bathroom is open air lending to the bygone days of traditional bush camping!
