Overview of Ngare Serian

Kenya, Masai Mara

The Masai Mara's most intimate camp, Ngare Serian is located in the Mara North Conservancy and has an air of seclusion – the camp can only be accessed via a rope bridge.

Ngare provides fabulously stylish and charismatic lodging – each of its four luxury marquees are situated on an elevated, solid hardwood deck with views across the African landscape. Each tent is provided with a personal game viewing vehicle and trained guide for optimal game viewing and decorated in stylish, yet traditional safari style. The tents house spacious bedrooms with 4-poster beds and bathrooms with flush toilets, twin basins, sunken bathtubs and separate showers. The communal dining area is great for kicking back with a good book.

Friend and family groups will enjoy this intimate 4 000 acre setting; and there are loads of activities to keep everyone entertained: from walking safaris to river fishing. Expect to be wowed by gorgeous views overlooking the Mara River from your bedroom and waking up to the rich inimitable smell of the bush each morning.

The Alex Walker Ngare Serian Lodge was also fabulous. Steve the guide was the best we had. Make sure you request him for all your guests. Just fantastic. We were in tent 4— the last one down at the river. Very large tent and a great location (if you don't mind the hippos talking from about 3:30 AM and through the day—so noisy—but fun). Great food and service here. Totally recommend it.

From the trekking, we were off to Ngare Serian Lodge. You must know that this is a wonderful property. Situated next to the river, we had a constant view of hippos (even from the shower) as well as a constant serenade from them. We were lucky enough to have a large double tent which was more than roomy. Kim and Joe were terrific hosts and the staff was friendly and accommodating. As with all camps, the food was excellent and plentiful.

In both the Serian camps, we enjoyed eating at a communal table as we enjoyed meeting and getting to know the other guests. At Chameleon Hill and in Lewa, the seating was separate.

We had chosen our guide based on the recommendation of a friend who had been to the Masai Mara last year and stayed at a Serian property John and William were terrific as guide and driver. It was nice that we had them all to ourselves for the 6 days that we were in the Mara. They were generally responsive to our requests.

Wonderful location and tent. Our guide Steve was superb – very knowledgeable and flexible. Fun to be with, spoke flawless English, very intelligent. We saw a lot, including a wonderful nighttime altercation between a pack of hyenas and a lion family. The food overall was very good. Their vegetable dishes were wonderful. Caveat – the meat dishes were consistently overcooked. The service was very attentive, although at times too attentive and hovering. Overall, it was a wonderful experience. I had hoped for more varied walking opportunities, but perhaps my expectations in this regard were unrealistic.

The romantic Serian Ngare is also for the adventurous with access via a swingbridge across the Mara River. Beautiful spacious tents, set so close to the river it feels as if the hippos may try out your bath tub!

The Serian was just like you said… luxurious yet a true African experience. We couldn’t have been more pleased.
