Wayo Walking Camp

Overview of Wayo Walking Camp

Tanzania, Serengeti

Wayo Walking Camp sits in a protected wilderness area within the northern Serengeti National Park. With its simple 2-person dome tents lying under thorn trees, the camp is a basic one with all the necessary creature comforts like soft mattresses, comfortable chairs and hot-water showers. And thanks to its lightweight and eco-friendly nature the camp can be set up anywhere, following the rhythms of the wildlife and putting you in prime position for fantastic animal sightings.

The camp's location puts you at the heart of an unspoilt Serengeti ecosystem and the focus at Wayo Walking Camp is to allow you to discover it on foot. One of the few operators to be granted permission to walk in the Serengeti, Wayo takes advantage of this concession by offering expertly guided walking safaris – accompanied by armed park rangers – in an environment that will thrill as much as it will amaze you.

Your day is spent moving through the tree-studded savannah, absorbing the sights and sounds of the landscape and enjoying the knowledge and expertise of your guide. There is plenty to see: Wayo Walking Camp is set on the annual Wildebeest Migration route which almost guarantees you amazing wildlife viewing in Migration season, from about November to June.

That being said, this remote corner of the Serengeti is excellent for game viewing all year round and you never know what you will discover on foot. Back at camp you have star-lit suppers and chilled drinks around the campfire to look forward to, with a hearty supper rounding off the perfect day on safari in Tanzania.

Tent

In keeping with its low-impact philosophy, the accommodation at Wayo Walking Camp is simple and comfortable. The dome tent is metal-framed, insect-proof and large enough for two people to stand up in. You sleep on thick mattresses dressed with crisp cotton linen. There is a bathroom tent located close by and well screened from view; here you find a traditional safari shower (hot-water bucket-style), a canvas wash basin and a toilet.

Other room type

If you would like a night to remember, then request the camp’s ‘Star Tent’. Made only of insect-proof gauze, this tent gives its guests unfettered views of the over-arching cosmos and has a waterproof cover that can be thrown on if needed.

General Facilities

Wayo Walking Camp has been designed to leave the lightest of footprints on the Serengeti environment and consequently is of modest design. There is a communal mess tent that serves as a meeting area before activities and to sit down to meals if they are not enjoyed outside.

Each guest tent has its own shaded area with table and chairs for you to relax in during the heat of the day.

Dining

The day begins with early morning tea and coffee and a light breakfast to get you on the trail just after sunrise; a more substantial packed breakfast is enjoyed later in the shade of a tree. Lunch is served back at camp during the heat of the day and a 3-course supper is your reward after evening drinks and sunset. Meals are served communally outside under the shade or beneath the stars unless the weather dictates the use of the mess tent.

Most meal preparation is done before the safari in Arusha, enabling Wayo Walking Camp to serve multi-course meals of a high standard while based in a remote wilderness. It also cuts down on waste and energy, in keeping with Wayo's drive for eco-efficiency. There is a small kitchen at camp where the final preparations to the menu are made, and you enjoy cold drinks along with your meals.
