Xugana Island Lodge
Xugana Island Lodge is set in a true natural wonder, the pristine Okavango Delta – the world's largest inland Delta supports a rich diversity of wildlife and some 450 bird species. The Lodge nestles under a grand canopy of trees on an island overlooking the lush Xugana Lagoon, with its network of tranquil waterways and whispering papyrus beds.
Enjoy thrilling power boat cruises and dreamy jaunts in traditional dug-out canoes (mokoro) in the expert care of Xugana's local guides. You may encounter the rare red lechwe or the semi-aquatic sitatunga antelope on superb nature walks, or indulge in a spot of fishing for Tiger and Bream in the Lagoon.

The Luxury Family Tents have two identical en suite Luxury Tents connected at the entry way. This is a great option for either friends travelling together or for a family with children.
The Lodge’s Luxury Tents epitomize minimal elegance and well thought-out design. Xugana Island accommodates 22 guests in 10 Luxury Tents, each with views over the lagoon. All the rooms feature twin / king beds, en suite bathrooms, overhead fans, a private viewing deck – mesh-fronted to maximise view of the lagoon while providing the option of opening up or keeping enclosed.
Xugana Island Lodge offers an intimate Delta experience, with facilities designed to bring you closer to the natural rhythm of this unique ecosystem. Unwind in the swimming pool overlooking the lagoon or gather around the communal firepit on the over-water deck—perfect for sharing stories and stargazing to the soundtrack of the surrounding watery wilderness.
Most activities are water-based, including guided mokoro excursions and boat safaris through the winding channels. Depending on the season, guided bush walks provide a ground-level perspective on the Delta's ecology. For those seeking a bird's-eye view, scenic helicopter flights are available at an extra cost—offering breathtaking vistas and the chance to spot elephants, hippos, red lechwe, and buffalo from above.
Reaching the lodge is part of the adventure: a scenic light aircraft flight brings you to a nearby airstrip, followed by a tranquil boat or mokoro ride through the channels to the island jetty, where a warm welcome awaits. With in-room Wi-Fi, you can stay connected when needed.

The service is warm and sincere, perfectly complementing the food and a worthy selection of South African wines. The kitchen serves up a fusion of delicious local flavours and international cuisine, which is served in an open-air boma or the alfresco dining area. Both are semi-enclosed areas under the island's towering mahogany and mangosteen trees and offer differing, but equally dazzling, views over the Okavango Delta's pristine waters.
A romantic, candlelight dinner for two on the floating deck is highly recommended with its novel position on the lagoon and star-studded sky overhead.
This is a permanent water camp so only water activities and walking are offered. Good to combine with a land camp but perfect for those wanting a bit of relaxation while on safari.

Xugana was a smaller lodge and more to our liking. Again, the accommodation was comfortable and had all we needed for our stay. The water safaris were a new experience for us and very enjoyable. The nature walk was a welcome change from sitting still for hours on trips out. On our last night, we were treated to a special dinner out on the lagoon with just ourselves and a member of staff serving food and drinks. It was a wonderful end to this leg of the holiday.
Knowledgeable guides on safari and Mokoro (every bird, antelope, insect, frog, animal tracks in the sand — they knew it all and found the lions after tracking them). The guide at Xugana Island Lodge drove the vehicle so the light would be optimal for photographs. He had an encyclopedic knowledge of the animals in the reserve and used reference manuals to help identify birds.
Final dinner at Xugana Island Lodge was the most memorable experience of them all. The staff said a farewell to me mentioning it was my last night. The candlelit dinner in the bush under the stars brought tears to my eyes. No one has ever, I mean, ever been so kind and generous to me on a vacation. It was a beautiful experience.
We had the most amazing and enjoyable time and everything was excellently organised by you. I think our ultimate highlight was seeing a successful wild dog hunt right in front of us just to name one of many highlights. I posted a tiny selection of photo’s on my facebook page if you haven’t seen any of my photo’s yet.
Thanks for everything and by talking with other guests and guides, we definitely want to go back and explore even more of Botswana so we’ll be in contact again at some point in the future (once we save some more money!!).
Xugana – very friendly staff, nice lodge, walking safari
We all agreed that the three camps we did (Xugana, Leroo La Tau, and Savute) offered a diverse perspective from a landscape and animal standpoint and were therefore a really nice complement. The order in which we did the camps was also great. We started in Xugana which is much more relaxing and tranquil and that was what we needed after a very long journey from the US. The location of the camp in the Okavango delta is stunning and I'm so glad we got to spend some time there.
