Adventurer Uganda's Fly-In Gorilla Trek
This bucket-list experience takes you deep into Bwindi Impenetrable Forest for an eye-opening encounter with highly endangered mountain gorillas. After landing at the international airport in Entebbe, you will fly to the Kihihi airstrip on the outskirts of Bwindi National Park. Home to roughly 340 mountain gorillas, the park is one of the two remaining protected sites where this subspecies of great ape exist in the wild. Some of the family groups are habituated to human presence and will allow trekkers to track and observe them from a respectful and mandated distance as they go about their daily lives. Back at your accommodation, which is the tranquil Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp, keep an eye open for gorillas strolling right through the camp!
Part of this 5-day rainforest experience includes luxurious and authentic tented accommodation, as well as an encounter with the indigenous Batwa people. For those seeking to extend their East African journey, this fly-in gorilla safari is a great match with a trip to the Serengeti or the Masai Mara to see the Big 5 or Wildebeest Migration.
When you book this safari Go2Africa will donate $5 to the Wildlife Tourism College of Maasai Mara to support the annual sponsorship of two students.

we were anxious to get to the Sanctuary Gorilla Camp at Bwindi anyway. We weren’t disappointed. The 94 steps from the road to the camp were designed to get us in shape for the treks to come in search of the mountain gorillas. As usual the staff and accommodations were first rate but I do have to single out Elii. He is the epitome of Sanctuary staff. He was always there when we needed something from bringing us a cheese and fruit platter because we had missed lunch, which we mistakenly left on our deck and was promptly finished off by the local monkeys, to figuring out why Jan’s phone wouldn’t connect to the internet. He knew what we ate for breakfast and what wine...
After a night at The Boma, you take a light aircraft for a scenic flight to the fringes of Bwindi National Park. At the landing strip in Kihihi, you will meet a representative from Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp. Drive through the fertile and lush Ugandan landscape past small farming communities and terraced hillsides en route to the camp, and allow your guide to introduce you to the local history, culture and way of life. Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp is unique because it is located on a private concession within Bwindi National Park, and gorillas can be seen walking right through the camp. Once you have arrived at the lodge, take some time to relax in preparation for an exciting day of trekking.
After a restful night’s sleep lulled by the sounds of the forest, you will rise early to set out on your expedition in search of the shy and gentle apes of the Bwindi Forest. Although you should prepare yourself for muddy, humid and perhaps challenging conditions, a day of trekking through the rainforest is possible for all reasonably fit and healthy travellers. Expert trackers and guides will lead you to one of the forest’s habituated family groups of mountain gorillas and you will be able to spend a maximum of an hour observing the group as they feed, forage, play or interact. On returning to the camp, indulge in a well-deserved massage at the spa.
The Batwa people have inhabited the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest for thousands of years and have not forgotten the old ways of life. As part of your stay, you are invited to witness a re-enactment of life as it was for the Batwa in the rainforest, and have the opportunity of interacting with these incredible people. The remainder of your time at Gorilla Forest Camp can be spent hiking, birding, visiting the local village or simply soaking up the sights and sounds of the forest from the lodge.

He knew what we ate for breakfast and what wines we wanted with dinner. Then there were the gorillas. The trekking groups are limited to 8 and once the gorillas are found we are limited to one hour of picture taking etc. It took our group a little over an hour of climbing and slogging through the mud to find our “family”. There were 4 babies, one teenager, 2 females and a very large silverback. The experience was amazing we just about wore out our cameras and all but the silverback were more than willing to entertain us. The silverback, pretty much, was just laying in some bushes nearby until he decided he had had enough, he rose up, stared at us for a few nervous moments and sauntered off into the brush just feet from where we were standing. I don’t think anyone in our group was breathing. I had a bit of a life changing experience….Jan was videoing some babies climbing in a tree nearby and I was standing just behind her watching when the teenager (about the size of a chimpanzee) came running up to me and threw his “arms” around my leg and had my entire knee in his mouth. The ranger who was accompanying us ran over and chased him away and told me “he wasn’t biting you, he was just playing”….you could’ve fooled me. The entire days experience will be talked about for years to come. The following day Jan and I joined a young lady from the local village for a walking tour to visit a pygmy group that had lived in the mountains with the gorillas until it was turned into a National Park. The government relocated them and they seem content with their new environment. We also visited a medicine man who explained how all the leaves and berries were used for medicines. We visited the local hospital, a primary school filled with the most beautiful children and a woman’s craft shop and a man who makes gin out of bananas (not great). A wonderful day.!!
Bid adieu to the rainforest and the friendly staff at Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp before transferring back to the Kihihi airstrip for your return flight to the Entebbe International Airport. As you fly over the landscape, you have time to reflect on and appreciate your privileged time in the precious Ugandan rainforest.
