Spend three memorable nights at the hauntingly beautiful Makgadikgadi Pans at Jack’s Camp, one of Botswana’s original Kalahari camps. This legendary safari lodge is situated in a private concession on the border of the Makgadikgadi Pans National Park which allows for game drives both during the day and at night plus guided nature walks.
Explore this vast, virtually unvisited area with walking safaris, game drives, quad biking adventures and cultural interactions. Get up close to the curious meerkats and elusive brown hyenas of the Kalahari and patrol the rolling grasslands adjacent to the salt pans for a surprisingly wide range of big game that includes zebra, giraffe, wildebeest and all the major predators. Following the rains, the summer bird watching (November to April) is phenomenal. This short but intensive Kalahari safari combines beautifully with the Okavango Delta for a complete study in contrast.

Itinerary
Day to day
Fly from Maun Airport to Jack’s Camp in the Kalahari Desert. On arrival, you will enjoy a delicious high tea before your first thrilling game drive into the vast Makgadikgadi grasslands. Enjoy the sunset and a fascinating talk on how the Makgadikgadi salt pans were formed. Return to camp via a short spotlit night drive for a sumptuous dinner served in the elegant mess tent.
Get up early and head out to find the local meerkats. These friendly, mongoose-type fellows sometimes use visitors as lookout-posts and often like to cuddle up for some warmth on cold winter mornings or use your shadow for shade on hotter summer days.
Enjoy a picnic breakfast, followed by a visit to a remote cattle post to learn more about the traditional culture of both the Batswana people and the San Bushmen of the region. Pay a visit to Chapman’s Boabab, said to be the largest tree in Africa, where you will learn about the history of Botswana’s early explorers before returning to camp for lunch. In the afternoon, go on a quad-biking adventure and enjoy another magnificent Makgadikgadi sunset.
Embark on an early morning archaeological expedition on the edge of the Makgadikgadi Pans, taking some time to look at the ancient stone tools still strewn about the area. Head back to camp for a delectable brunch and then relax at camp before your afternoon tea. It’s then time to head off on a game drive and the search for the brown hyena, one of Africa’s rarest carnivores. Keep a lookout for other big game species of course – the area has far more big mammals than people think – and return for a candlelit dinner back at the lodge.
Spend an unforgettable morning with local San Bushmen trackers. Learn how they have survived in this harsh environment for thousands of years, using their ancient knowledge of plants, animal behaviour and hunting skills. Indulge in one last lunch before heading back to Maun Airport for your flight home or onward holiday connections.
