Overview of Angama Mara

Kenya, Masai Mara

Kenya has had a reputation as one of the most romantic and beautiful spots on Earth since Robert Redford and Meryl Streep whispered sweet nothings to each other there during Out of Africa's famous picnic scene. Today, it is the site of one of East Africa’s most outstanding lodges: Angama Mara has been carefully built on two kopjes on the edge of the Mara Triangle escarpment. As a guest of Angama Mara, you can re-enact your own once-in-a-lifetime picnic there, whether to propose or toast a honeymoon and the start of a new life together.

Everything about Angama Mara has been carefully calibrated: from the two camps where each of the 15 tents has a 10-metre / 33-foot wide glass front (perfect for watching the dawn hot-air balloons drift by) to the outstanding décor. But this unique coming together of location, views and design is completed by outstanding game viewing (the croc-filled Mara River, scene of much drama during the annual Wildebeest Migration, is a mere 20 minutes away) and a total commitment to social welfare through the Oloololo Wildlife Community Trust. Add garden-to-table dining experiences and a photography studio run by a top wildlife photographer, and you can see why Angama Mara is sought-after by guests wanting a completely immersive experience.

The Swahili word ‘angama' means ‘to be suspended in mid-air' and it is a fitting name for your accommodation: each tent seems to hang on the edge of the Rift Valley, ensuring views that seem to go on forever. Each eco-friendly tent area is over 100sqm (nearly 1 000sqft) meaning you have complete privacy as you savour the rhythm of sunrises and sunsets over this ancient land.

Make a Positive Impact Through Travel

Angama Mara is founded on the deeply embedded principle of running a profitable business to make a meaningful and sustainable difference to the communities that neighbour the lodge, and the wildlife and land surrounding it. Each guest at Angama Mara contributes a US$ 20 per night donation to the Angama Foundation, a separate entity set up to support projects that make a difference. The Foundation is active through three fields of work: Education, Healthcare and Conservation.

I can’t begin to express how excited and impressed we were when we learned that Angama Mara had a photo studio and professionals on staff to offer photographic services, support and expertise. The reason: having good images of our trip to share with our family & friends and to document our East Africa travel experiences was important to us. We have to believe most visitors to Angama Mara feel similarly.

The fact that Angama Mara recognizes this and provides for it is one of the many customer-centric benefits the property offers and, in our minds, truly makes Angama Mara stand out.

My husband and I spent several hours in the Angama Mara photo studio with Andrew and Robert. Andrew Andrawes, in particular, was exceedingly generous with his time, patiently going through our photos with us to edit and improve them. (Note: We are recreational, novice photographers in every possible way, so improving our photos took time!). After we departed Angama Mara, we emailed Andrew to inquire about a recommendation for photo editing services at home so we could edit some additional photos from our trip. Andrew graciously offered to do the editing for us, which was above and beyond our expectations.

We are so happy to now have a set of good photos that capture our memories from our time in East Africa. No doubt, we will enjoy them for many years to come.

Very fancy, with a pool and gym. Did a great walking safari. Great food and hospitality including photographer guidance and camera rental. Loved the shop. Stunning views from the property.

Negative was a group dinner, (big negative for us) and a guide who was a bit uncomfortable with hospitality and difficult to understand, but a good photographer and a sweet person (more interested in photography while the drive seemed a bit rote to him). Really good massage on the deck. Good wine, and exceptional individualized service. Met really interesting people here and they take a lot of pride in making sure everything is perfect.

We loved the place, overlooking the valley. The food, service and everything was first class. The downside was that you would always hear everyone talking in the tent next to ours. Also, we wished it was not so “contemporary,” and wished it was more “African looking.” However, we had a wonderful guide, Moses, and saw every animal we wanted to see!

On the second morning was the balloon ride! Excellent! We really loved that! It was extremely well organized, and when we returned from seeing all the animals below us, they had a gourmet breakfast waiting for everyone!

•Beautiful in a different way.
•It was kind of nice to be able to have a menu.
•Despite the fact that it was a larger property/more hotel-like, I liked that the manager spent so much time with us and our butler was personable.
•We saw tons of animals here including our first lion.
•I actually had read about this property in Travel & Leisure, but never put it together… the view was amazing. We met the owner's daughter while we were there.
•I liked the show they put on at sundowner time with the local tribe dancing. Also, liked that they had some local Masai women working/making beads at their gift shop.
