Governors' Camp
Tucked away on the forested banks of the Mara River, Governors’ Camp is located in a pristine spot of wilderness which is home to an incredible array of wildlife. Perfect for those seeking a down-to-earth safari experience, the comfortable tents at Governors’ Camp are ideally situated for a remarkable Masai Mara experience. Begin the day with an early morning game drive, searching for Africa’s legendary elephants, lions and leopards or perhaps even witnessing the Great Migration from about mid-year.
Another unforgettable way to start the morning in the Masai Mara is with a hot-air balloon safari. A nature walk, guided by the experienced and qualified naturalist, will have you learning all about the environment, while a visit to one of the traditional Maasai villages will give you the chance to learn more about their fascinating culture.
All the guides at Governors’ Camp have at least a silver qualification from the Kenya Professional Safari Guides Association, making them among the most knowledgeable in the area. The camp’s formidable site was established in 1972, making Governors’ one of the oldest tented camps in Kenya.

Most of the camp’s luxury tents offer uninterrupted views over either the Mara River or the endless Masai Mara plains, both of which are a memorable sight to enjoy first thing in the morning. Each tent is spacious and comfortable and has an en suite bathroom with hot and cold running water and flush toilets. The water for your shower is heated by eco-friendly briquettes, part of Governors’ commitment to conservation.rnrnFamily units are also available for groups or those travelling with young children. These tents are situated away from the river with large lawns for kids to play on.
The bar tent opens out onto a spacious deck that overlooks the Mara River. Relax here, with your favourite drink in hand, and take in the sunset after your day of adventure. Hippos have been known to cross the lawn in the evening, toddling out of the river for a night’s grazing.
Head to the spa tent for a range of treatments like massages, facials, body scrubs, manicures and pedicures.

Governors’ was great as always. Wonderful guide and friendly staff. We were very happy that we had our own private vehicle for 3 days!

Just to say I had an amazing trip. All contacts made very well, flights and lodges, fantastic, as was the food at all times. The guides at each camp/lodge were great as was the jeep transport. The Big 5 I saw many times; also two migrations, one at Governor’s Camp by zebras mostly and one at Olakira Camp, thousands of wildebeest; hunting lions, a pride of 9 lions, leopard several times, cheetah several times including a chase, all other African wildlife, black rhino, hippos, crocs, birds. Monkeys, snake, giant lizard, tortoise and of course elephants, giraffes etc, so all in all everything I had looked for in this trip came true. Fabulous photography at all times. I make photographic books for each trip and to select from the thousand photos is going to be very difficult!
Yes, we are back. In one word, the vacation was “fabulous”, one of the best vacations we ever had. The chef at Governor's camp did not make any extra effort to make vegan meal, but nevertheless, there were enough items – salad, pasta etc. that we can eat. Also, they need to better take care of flies floating on the salad. I put a comment to that effect on their survey. Game drives were all excellent and exciting. The drivers in both the camps are very knowledgeable and made all the best efforts to make sure we see as many animals as possible. In Masai Mara we even got to see the migration and crossing of the rivers by Wildebeest. That was the highlight of the entire tour, as I was very excited about it. Thanks to our driver, who drove us 2 hours through treacherous trails to get to the crossing point. Of course, I insisted on going there.
At Governors’ the drivers could go off-road and drive within 20-30 feet of the animals. Can you tell that we absolutely loved the Masai Mara!
