Overview of GweGwe Beach Lodge

South Africa, Mkambati Nature Reserve

South Africa has been keeping a secret—an untamed expanse mostly visited by locals with an innate sense of adventure, who seek untouched, wide-open spaces. This area, rich with a history of harmony between man and nature, is known as the Wild Coast. Seafarers know it for its unpredictable, powerful coastline, but it's the rugged landscape, unspoiled beaches, and pristine lands that draw in nature and adventure lovers alike.

Now, this verdant landscape can be shared with those hoping to surround themselves with the unrestrained beauty of the Wild Coast, while returning each day to an oasis of comfort and laid-back luxury, attended to by a doting staff. At the heart of the Wild Coast's Mkambati Nature Reserve lies GweGwe Beach Lodge, nestled on the scenic coastline overlooking the Indian Ocean, driven by the warm Agulhas current.

Here, you'll have front-row seats to the spectacle of the swell, loved by dolphins, against the peacefulness of indigenous forests, rugged cliffs, sandy coves, waterfalls, and grassland plains where antelope and zebra graze. Despite the wild waters on the coastline, GweGwe is ideally located with easy access to a sheltered beach cove, perfect for a tranquil beach day with refreshing ocean dips and water-based activities.

Arrive by small plane, helicopter, road, or even by boat, and enjoy activities like swimming, hiking, cycling, scuba diving, snorkelling, kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding and spa treatments. Situated in a marine protected area, this is one of the planet’s important global biodiversity hotspots. Your stay at GweGwe directly benefits the land and local community—so your visit truly has an impact.

GweGwe Beach Lodge is an easy-going, activity-filled escape with something new to do each day, from coastal hikes and estuary kayaking to snorkelling and cycling. Time your visit between mid-June and mid-July and you'll witness the spectacular Sardine Run—a natural phenomenon that draws dolphins, birds, and sharks in huge numbers. With laid-back luxury, a warm local welcome, and real community impact, and you've got an experience that's hard to beat. A stay at GweGwe combines well with a Big-5 safari at Kwandwe Private Game Reserve, a malaria-free reserve also in the Eastern Cape.

I’ve visited many remote & special places, yet the ‘Wild Coast’ of South Africa remains one of my favourite – quiet & remote, exceptional marine life, waterfalls flowing into the ocean and a sense of place knowing you are in sacred tribal land, and your travel has a positive impact.
