Overview of Kwandwe Uplands Homestead

South Africa, Eastern Cape

The Uplands Homestead lies at the heart of South Africa’s Kwandwe Private Game Reserve, 22 000 hectares (54 000 acres) of beautiful wilderness stretched out on either side of the Great Fish River. This safari destination is a natural conclusion to a vacation along the world-famous Garden Route.

Located in the malaria-free Eastern Cape province, this diverse and fascinating reserve has been restored and restocked with classic African wildlife. Kwandwe is a conservation success story which includes reclaiming areas of intense agriculture, reintroducing more than 7 000 wild animals (including elephant, black and white rhino, lion, leopard and cheetah), and providing a refuge for sensitive, sub-tropical thicket vegetation.

Uplands Homestead is perfect for families who want space for their kids to run around, or for small groups seeking privacy. A sensitively restored 1905 farmhouse, it has a lovely old-world feel and its grounds are fenced for peace of mind. Laze around the garden, cool off in the large swimming pool, or make use of your private ranger and 4×4 safari vehicle to explore the private game reserve in search of the Big 5 and other fascinating wildlife.

Comprising just 26 rooms split across two intimate lodges and three villas, the reserve offers one of the highest land-to-guest ratios in South Africa. The successful development of this high-yield/low-impact conservation model is key to furthering our numerous conservation initiatives. Kwandwe is committed to making a positive and lasting difference in the rural Eastern Cape, one of South Africa's least developed provinces. Working through their social development partner, the Ubunye Foundation, they invest in projects that improve lives and create sustainable livelihood opportunities in marginalised rural communities.

For every night you spend at Kwandwe, you make a difference through your Community & Conservation Levy. Funds are split equally between the conservation and community projects and initiatives, and the levy applies to all guests 12 years and older.

Exclusive Use

Accommodating up to six guests, Uplands Homestead is a restored 1905 farmhouse featuring three spacious en suite bedrooms with private terraces. Facilities range from an in-room safe and Wi-Fi to antique mirrors and Victorian claw-foot tubs in the bathrooms.

General Facilities

It’s a personalised experience at Uplands: in discussion with your ranger, you’ll determine the length and the route of your game drives into Kwande Private Game Reserve on your own private 4×4 safari vehicle while your personal chef and butler will take care of your needs back at the Uplands Homestead. Relax in the lodge’s wonderful gardens in between activities and make use of the large swimming pool.

We didnt think it coud get any better but Kwandwe Reserve was such a special experience the game drives were fantastic the whole family had an absolute ball and again our ranger Ryan, tracker Dennis and butler Zoy were great fun (there was a serious jenga competiition between them and Senan) We have amazing memories of our stay in South Africa!
