Overview

A sanctuary of serenity in one of South Africa’s most unique wildlife destinations, Morukuru Beach Lodge is ideal for travellers who want to extend their Cape Town experience. Enjoying an elevated location above the sun-bleached dunes of the De Hoop Reserve, Morukuru Beach Lodge overlooks an unspoilt Indian Ocean coastline that plays host to migrating southern right whales between July and November. Arriving in their hundreds to feed, breed and give birth, the whales add an unforgettable dimension to the crystal-clear waters and can easily be seen from the comfort of land.

Comprising only five sumptuous suites, Morukuru Beach Lodge places an emphasis on the personalised side of adventure in De Hoop. Two daily guided activities are included and you can choose between game drives – there are antelope, baboons and ostrich in the reserve – and low-tide walks, mountain biking trips, land-based whale watching and sand-boarding. There is even the chance to go snorkelling in protected rock pools – an amazing marine experience. Equipment such as helmets, bikes, masks, snorkels, sand boards and wetsuits are all provided.

Complete with a bar, restaurant, swimming pool, hot tub and free Wi-Fi, Morukuru Beach Lodge will appeal to groups of friends travelling together as well as families. The lodge accepts children of all ages and there is a child-minding service available. At only three hours from Cape Town by road, it makes a great stop over for a night or two for self-drivers on their way to the Garden Route.

Rooms

Ocean View Suite

There are five sumptuous suites at Morukuru Beach Lodge, four with stunning views of the Indian Ocean and one tucked away in the dunes. Each is very spacious and features a king-size bed that can be converted into twins if requested. There is also a daybed in each suite, perfect for midday lounging and easy to convert into an extra bed for a child. Floor-to-ceiling glass doors lead to private terraces and outdoor seating areas where you can sit back and soak up the views.

All suites have their own bathroom with twin basins, walk-in rain showers and separate bathtubs with complimentary toiletries and separate toilets. In-room comforts include a television and fireplace, complimentary Wi-Fi, an electronic safe and a tea-and-coffee station plus free bottled water and soft drinks.

Facilities

Morukuru Beach Lodge was built to exacting environmental standards and is fully ‘off the grid’. Electricity is generated by solar panels with a backup generator. Hot water is produced by pellet burners and the whole lodge has water-based underfloor heating.

There is a restaurant at the main building, complete with a bar, a courtyard and first-floor terraces. The lodge’s swimming pool and hot tub are a welcome sight while the convivial fireplace and snug lounge are appealing on cold nights. The lodge has a laundry service as well as small boutique for retail therapy.

Morukuru Beach Lodge has complimentary Wi-Fi as well as a long list of sporting and outdoor equipment for use: there is beach volley ball and croquet to enjoy or you can pick up a mountain bike; grab a wetsuit, mask and snorkel; or pick a sand board and hit the dunes – your choice at your pace.

Dining

All your meals are included at Morukuru Beach Lodge and you sit down to three delicious meals a day, care of the in-house restaurant. Meal times may be moved around to accommodate an activity – a low-tide walk for example – and staff are happy to provide you with a lunch basket and blanket for a picnic wherever you like – whether whale watching from the dunes or surrounded by fragrant fynbos vegetation.

Meals are served indoors or outdoors depending on the weather; room service is available.
