Overview of Morukuru Beach Lodge

South Africa, West Coast, Cape Town

A sanctuary of serenity in one of South Africa's most unique wildlife destinations, Morukuru Beach Lodge is ideal for travellers who want to extend their Cape Town experience. Enjoying an elevated location above the sun-bleached dunes of the De Hoop Reserve, Morukuru Beach Lodge overlooks an unspoilt Indian Ocean coastline that plays host to migrating southern right whales between July and November. Arriving in their hundreds to feed, breed and give birth, the whales add an unforgettable dimension to the crystal-clear waters and can easily be seen from the comfort of land.

Comprising only five sumptuous suites, Morukuru Beach Lodge places an emphasis on the personalised side of adventure in De Hoop. Two daily guided activities are included and you can choose between game drives – there are antelope, baboons and ostrich in the reserve – and low-tide walks, mountain biking trips, land-based whale watching and sand-boarding. There is even the chance to go snorkelling in protected rock pools – an amazing marine experience. Equipment such as helmets, bikes, masks, snorkels, sand boards and wetsuits are all provided.

Complete with a bar, restaurant, swimming pool, hot tub and free Wi-Fi, Morukuru Beach Lodge will appeal to groups of friends travelling together as well as families. The lodge accepts children of all ages and there is a child-minding service available. At only three hours from Cape Town by road, it makes a great stop over for a night or two for self-drivers on their way to the Garden Route.

Fantastic setting and amazing accommodation. Staff made us feel part of a family and were attentive but not intrusive. The boys loved it. The coastal walks, sand dune surfing, low-key wildlife and stunning room vistas made it a different and very enjoyable diversion. The Whale watching was brilliant. Guests should note 60km plus unmade road access and that after 6 pm park gates close!
