Overview

Located on the rim of the dramatic and breathtaking Ngorongoro Crater, the lodge offers magnificent views over the world’s largest intact and unflooded caldera. The crater is a place of rare natural wonders, from its miraculous terrain to the abundant fauna and flora it supports, and it is more than worthy of its status as a World Heritage Site.

Ngorongoro Crater Lodge boasts architecture as impressive as its setting. While the structural style evokes a traditional Maasai mud-and-stick manyatta (homestead), the interiors and finishes are pure opulence. Chandelier-lit bathrooms, personal butler service and very fine dining give Ngorongoro Crater Lodge a richly deserved reputation for excellence.

The encircled grasslands of the crater floor offer excellent game viewing year-round with 25 000 large mammals, including black rhino, zebra and eland, and Africa’s densest population of lion. The rainforests of the crater walls are home to elephant, buffalo, leopard and cheetah, making for spectacular game viewing.

Crater Lodge is impressive and everyone helped plan the proposal, from Nic (lodge manager) to Ladislaus (South Camp manager) to Msisi (our amazing butler). Everything went smoothly, the location was unbeatable, the sundowners were delicious, the priv ate dinner was lovely. Game viewing at the Crater is very impressive (we saw five rhino in one day).

I am not sure if there is a better location to stay around the Crater. The lodge's views are wonderful. Even in your toilet you can see the crater below with stunning view! But we are most impressed by its service. You return from your excursion and you see your bathtub full of warm water waiting for you. Your kid has a very delicious beefsteak, so you want one more small piece: you have a full sirloin, even more tasty! That is exactly what we have had in this lodge. Thanks, Nic ( the manager) and his team! One of the best hotel services we have ever been offered! Room tip: If you have kids, you'd better choose a room near the main reception/restaurant.

I simply loved the &Beyond concept.. I have never stayed anywhere were the service and ambiance was made so personal... it was unbelievable., both at Ngorogoro and Serengeti. Everything was beautiful, the accommodations, the food, the surroundings. And the game drives could not have been better.. I really came back in love with both.

This place changed my life. Seriously. At one point in our three days there, I had the distinct feeling of having a sense of belonging to a much larger world. Humans, and especially Westerners, can forget that there's a whole, big, vast natural world out there. Feeling like a small speck in that greatness was humbling and powerful. I felt deeply appreciative of being able to be there, among all of that wilderness and beauty. This was, by far, my favorite stop, and will make all vacations from here on out very disappointing. Again, we were met with the warmth of Lake Manyara. There was a real sense of camaraderie at the camp, which was a tone set by the manager, Baraka. He was the most present of all of the managers we encountered. He was always there to say good morning. He was there at the end of every game drive to ask what we'd seen. He was at every campfire. As a result, guests had a tendency to congregate and chat, and we really appreciated that. The rooms were marvelous and comfortable. They felt luxurious and still like you were roughing it a little bit (the bucket shower, while warm and appreciated, was less than glamourous). :) We were spoiled by really being in the thick of things. On our first day, as we tried to take a nap, we were awoken by a loud mooing, only to find that the Great Migration was hanging out in front of our tent. We became accustomed to leaving the camp, driving 30 seconds and seeing zebras. Or knowing we were almost back at camp--just hang a right at the giraffes. I loved the food being prepared in front of us on the barrel fires. I cried went I left the Serengeti. What a magical thing to have been part of.

My wife and I spent 2 nights at this property. The rooms were phenomenal with plenty of room to relax and enjoy a romantic getaway. The staff was very good at accommodating you every need and surprising you with some great memories. One afternoon after a long and eventful safari we return to find our super butler provide us with a hot bath and Champaign to comfort our tired bodies. The guides are very knowledgeable and I must admit they have extraordinary eye site. I would highly recommend a stay at this &beyond property.

When we arrived at the Lake Manyara Airport, our next driver was there waiting for us with hot coffee, chocolate and a few homemade bickies. We waited for only a short time for another couple before we headed off to the Ngorongoro Crater. At this s tage we really did not have any idea of how long the trip was. But the driver Henri gave us a little bit of information, but the drive itself was very interesting for us. On arrival at the Crater we were again welcomed by the staff who introduced themsleves with cold towels and a very nice drink. We were welcomed again by Irene the Manager and introduced to our Butler Nehmas at this time then shown to out rooms. We feel it is an understatement to say the rooms (and view) were fantastic. The room style being so eclectic and different to anything else we had experienced. The mixture of French and Maasai styles was so unique and interesting. Also that fact that William and Alice had one and we had one (not really sharing but was connected) was great. Our first meal on the balcony overlooking the Crater was spectacular.

Ngongorogo Crater Lodge was everything we'd expected - magnificent! The view over the crater and our 'mud huts' were just to die for. The staff packed a picnic lunch for us for our day in the crater, which was the best day of our trip and a wonderfu l way to end our safari.

The crater of Norongoro was impressive by it mere size and morphology and the change of microclimate from close to rain forest on the slopes and edge of the crater to normal dry savanna down in the crater bottom 600m deeper. Also the large flocks of zebras, wilderbeasts and elefants were impressive. Here we also saw our only sighting of the black rhino and a lot of hippos having fun in some water holes.
