Overview of Sanctuary Chobe Chilwero

Botswana, Chobe National Park

Bordering Chobe National Park – home to Kalahari elephants, the world's largest species – this safari retreat offers splendid views across the Chobe River and its dry-season floodplains. Fifteen family-friendly bungalows are set in manicured gardens and Chobe Chilwero boasts the only full spa facility on Botswana's safari circuit, with a tree-top treatment room that offers a unique pampering experience.

Add morning and afternoon game drives to Chobe National Park – conveniently scheduled to avoid pre-dawn wake-up calls and allowing time for breakfast – as well as tranquil sunset riverboat cruises and you have all the ingredients for the perfect safari in an area that boasts the highest concentration of elephants on the continent.

Guests at Chobe Chilwero can bask in the split-level swimming after a morning photographing sable antelope, water-weeded hippo, long-horned kudu, sleepy crocodiles and adorable banded mongooses in Chobe National Park. Then watch the sun transform from egg-yolk yellow to a blood-red fireball as it sinks below the far-off horizon…

The staff was amazing. This room was our favorite and the bed was so huge and comfortable. The food was great. The game drives and boat rides were much more crowded here than in the other places. The landscapes were much drier also. We did get to see a very large group of lions sleeping, like 11 or 12! The Botswana Independence Day happened while we were there so there was a special BBQ on the lawn (we tried caterpillars!) and we had an interesting history lesson by the fire at night. We also had a fun boat ride on our last night on a larger boat (which had an upper deck) with lots of appetizers and drinks!

We had amazing lion sightings in Chobe. Every day we saw lions doing something interesting-one day it was a mom and her cubs, another day it was three lions tracking/chasing Impala and the last day it was a whole Pride feasting on an elephant. Unbelievable.

The most luxurious lodge and the best designed and appointed rooms. Superb food and lovely staff. Great guide in Tony. I thought the Chobe reserve would be like a motorway when we first entered, but once Tony got us further into the park, we had a more private drive. The main problem with Chobe reserve is that the guides are clearly not allowed to go off road and don't. This means that to get close to game one needs them to wander across a road obligingly. This contrasts somewhat with the other reserves. The elephants at least were obliging and there were lots of them. They even swam the river for us, which was magical.

The river boat trip was superb, a welcome change from bouncing around in a Land Cruiser and a change to see hippos and crocs.

The warm welcome and a completely lovely large room; we think it had the best meals and the BBQ was exceptional.
