The Giraffe Manor
Situated within 140 acres of indigenous forest and playing host to resident herd of Rothschild’s giraffe, The Giraffe Manor offers an experience incomparable to any other. The building dates back to the 1930s and is modelled on a Scottish hunting lodge, creating a charming, yet luxurious place where animal lovers will enjoy every moment of interacting with giraffe and exploring the forest.
You find the friendly giraffes in the most unsuspecting places, like the breakfast table or your room window, vying for your attention and checking out what’s on your plate. Relax on the verandah where you can hand feed these friendly long-necked beauties. Activities include forest walks to see the variety of bird species and rare animals found here, visits to the AFEW Giraffe Centre and the Karen Blixen Museum.

Wow - how amazing to be able to feed and come so close to these tall and uniqe animals! Apart from being able to feed giraffes the Manor is really beautiful. Rooms are all unique and individually done and if you stay in a front facing room you might just be able to feed a giraffe from your room!

The Giraffe Manor was spectacular, the service there was exceptional. We were greeted by Tony and he gave us a tour and explained everything. The amount of time spent there was just right, I can see that spending too much time there can get a little boring, but it is highly recommended. Melanie and I love exploring dishes from all over the world so we asked if they could make something more traditional during our stay there. They made us kachumbari, ugali, chapati, and nyama choma. I also enjoyed quite a bit of South African wine and Procera (Kenyan gin).
Giraffe Manor was better than I could have dreamt. I fell in love with those giraffes. It was so magical. I can't put into words what it's like to open the curtain to the window at 5:30am and see a giraffe staring in. I got a little teary-eyed when we had to leave.
On our final full day, we went to Giraffe Manor. Because the Air Force wouldn't let the plane fly, we had to wait an hour or more before we could take off. When we got to Wilson Airport, there were some traffic problems, and it was 2:00 when we finally arrived at Giraffe Manor. We felt quite rushed as we were served lunch right away and then tea on the deck to meet the giraffes. It would have been nice to have a bit more time and be less rushed. However, the reasons for our delay were beyond anyone's control.
We were thrilled to find that we were in Helen's room where the giraffes came to the windows in the morning wanting to be fed. We then went downstairs to have more giraffe encounters which were amazing. Although it was obviously a particular routine for the interaction between giraffes and guests, it was amazing.
The retreat was wonderful and a great place to relax before our flight to London. However, we did wish we had arranged to go to the National Animal Orphanage and Giraffe Centre.
I stayed at the Garden Manor, which is positioned slightly behind the main manor, but still has wonderful views of the courtyard and the property. Built in exactly the same style as the main manor, it has 6 rooms, which I felt had a fresher feel, and where slightly bigger.
One can only feed the Giraffes from three of the rooms in the Garden Manor, namely Finch Hutton Suite, Helen & Kelly. It has its own dining room, which also attracts the giraffes over breakfast. Overall I think this is a delightful property to sell – the food was excellent, the staff exceptional and of course the giraffe’s obliging. Please remember you can only book the Garden Manor if you combine it with one of the other properties in the collection.
We had a blast at Giraffe Manor. I do wish we would have stayed two nights. It was such a beautiful and perfect place I would have loved to have more time to just enjoy it.
