Cape Town to Tanzania by Rail & Zanzibar
Travel through four African countries in style as you take the super-luxurious Rovos Rail from Cape Town to Dar es Salaam and relive the days when a more glamorous approach to travel was taken.
It is an unforgettable trip through South Africa, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Tanzania – watching as the landscapes change along the way with stopovers in many fascinating destinations en route.
But it is not all about the train journey though: you will enjoy a few days in Cape Town before the trip and end your journey off at a classic beach retreat on a private island just off the coast of Dar es Salaam.
When you book this safari Go2Africa will donate $5 to the VETA Hotel and Tourism Training Institute to support the annual sponsorship of two students.

A beautiful property with wonderful staff and amazing views. They were attentive and made sure we were comfortable and taken care of. Another accommodation we would recommend to anyone going to Cape Town for a special occasion.
There are many ways to spend your days in this diverse city. Bask in the sun on famous beaches like Camps Bay, enjoy a hike up Table Mountain (or take the rotating cable car) or go on a tour to the beautiful Cape Winelands and sample some of the region’s exquisite wines.
If you are up for a shopping spree for African keepsakes, there is no better place than the V&A Waterfront, which has a wide range of high-end stores and boutiques. A visit to the Two Oceans Aquarium comes highly recommended (its Atlantic kelp forest is mesmerising), as does a ferry ride to Robben Island for a tour of the infamous prison where Nelson Mandela was incarcerated. Many enjoyable hours can also be spent strolling around the cosmopolitan city centre, relaxing at the pavement cafes and browsing exciting art galleries.
Today you will travel to Cape Town Station where you will board the Rovos Rail Pride of Africa. This famous train – perhaps better viewed as a luxury hotel on railway tracks – will be your home for the next 14 nights.
Your Rovos journey winds its way through some of the most breath-taking landscapes in Africa. The train passes through South Africa, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Tanzania to its final destination – Dar es Salaam – stopping along the way so you can explore and sightsee on scheduled tours and excursions. Highlights include a 2-night Big 5 safari in Madikwe Game Reserve, history lectures, museum visits and a tour of Victoria Falls. Sit back and take in the scenery from the comfort of the lounge and viewing area, enjoy delicious meals in the dining car or nap in your comfortable and spacious compartment – every day will provide new views, stories and experiences.
Arrive in Dar es Salaam today, a bustling port city on Tanzania’s Indian Ocean coast. After disembarking, you transfer to Julius Nyerere International Airport and board a light aircraft flight to Songo Songo airstrip. Here you’ll be met and transferred to Fanjove Private Island, a beautiful beachside escape off Tanzania’s coast. The last days of your tour will be spent here, relaxing in a tropical beach paradise.
Classic, great-value private island experience off Tanzania
Ideal for post-safari holiday and honeymoons
Small and intimate with only six suites
Complimentary snorkelling and kayaking from the beach
Eco-friendly lodge with light footprint, rainwater harvesting and solar power
Great bird watching from November to March
After a long train journey, Fanjove Private Island is truly the perfect place to kick back and unwind. Spend your days soaking up the sun in this idyllic destination, lounging on powdery beaches and swimming in warm tropical waters. Here, you are encouraged to do as little or as much as you want, whatever your mood – from snorkelling and kayaking straight off the beach to sunset dhow cruises, scuba-diving excursions and slow walks around the island. And if Lady Luck is on your side, the visibility in the reefs is perfect for spotting pods of curious bottle-nosed and spinner dolphins, as well as endangered green turtles and migrating humpback whales.
After one last breakfast in paradise, your transfer will take you back to the Songo Songo airstrip for your flight to Dar es Salaam’s Julius Nyerere International Airport. Here, you can catch your connecting flight back home or continue your travels with another Go2Africa journey.
