Rattray's on Mala Mala is located on the banks of the Sand River in the Sabi Sands Game Reserve, a private and exclusive conservation area which shares an open border with the Kruger National Park. A refined and elegant safari lodge with authentic quality furnishings and original works of art, Rattray’s on Mala Mala captures the spirit of a classic African Safari.

The emphasis is however firmly on excellent game viewing: with no children under 16 allowed in camp and only four guests per game viewing vehicle, guests can concentrate on the main attraction – the extraordinary wildlife of the reserve. Sightings of the Big 5 are common and there are plenty of opportunities to view animal interactions during your morning and afternoon/evening game drives and nature walks, led by superb and passionate guides.

  • Classic colonial-style luxury safari lodge
  • 40-year tradition of big game safaris
  • Superb bird watching & all the predators
  • Focus on intimate game viewing
  • Top-class amenities & exceptional service

  • Game drives
  • Guided walks
  • Night drives
  • Star gazing
A stylish and intimate lodge with probably the best game viewing of any reserve. Attention to detail is evident throughout the lodge.

Each of the eight suites at Rattray’s at Mala Mala occupies its own elevated site overlooking the seasonal Sand River with remarkable views from its private terrace and heated plunge pools.

The suites are tastefully decorated with a touch of classic African style and each features a large bed, a generous lounge, writing desk and a small dining area. The his-and-hers bathrooms feature an indulgent bathtub and walk-in shower, although you may prefer to use the outdoor shower.

The comfortable lounge with enormous leather sofas and an open fireplace has an air of classic sophistication, as does the extensive library.

You can also relax in the attractive bar which showcases the history of the area and adjoins the wine cellar, stocked with a wide range of South Africa's best wines.

The public areas open onto an extensive wooden deck with spectacular views of the surrounding wilderness and boasts a large infinity pool.

There is a small but well-equipped fitness facility, a spa for massages and treatments and a curio boutique can be browsed for reminders of your stay.

Meals at Rattray's on Mala Mala are served in the refined, air-conditioned dining room or on the large adjoining deck overlooking the river where animals frequently come to drink. Atmospheric dinners are also served around a roaring log fire in the traditional African boma, set under a magnificent jackalberry tree. Dining in your suite is an exclusive and personal experience, and will be a highlight of a stay at Rattray’s on Mala Mala.

Rattray's on Mala Mala

John Gregory Moore

"Our first time in Sabi Sands, and what fantastic game viewing – we saw a cheetah kill. Luxurious lodge, great staff, will definitely recommend to others."

Akila Krish

We stayed one night in the main camp and then were transferred to Rattray's. Rattray's was incredible. The room, food, service and setting were all flawless. We felt right at home and at ease with everyone from the manager Alex, to the bartender and other staff. We had the same ranger/guide Adam Parker and he was just excellent. Great skills and a pleasure to deal with daily. We had the vehicle to ourselves on all days and that was really great. We saw several lions in multiple prides, a few lion kills, 8 white rhinos, 3 leopards (night drive action on two nights!), 2 African wild dog packs, hyena, and large herd of elephants in the river. Also, many other animals. They set us up for a short hike and a gourmet breakfast atop a hill with vast views and that was indeed, a lovely surprise. Both Prem and I simply loved Rattray's.
