Grumeti Safari

Combine a classic big game safari with away-from-the-crowds luxury accommodation. Bordering the Western Serengeti, the privately owned Singita Grumeti Reserves lie right on the wildebeest migration route and provide visitors with exclusive front-row seats to all the action. There’s excellent year-round viewing and all the big predators – lion, hyena, crocodile, cheetah and leopard – are in abundance but time your visit to coincide with the migration and you’ll witness dramatic river crossings and plenty of predator-prey interaction.

But there’s more to a Grumeti safari than the wildlife. Singita is a name synonymous with luxurious and exclusive safaris and this 162 000 hectare private concession is no exception. There are just five small properties in the concession, ensuring you get phenomenal game viewing with barely another vehicle in sight. What’s more, guides are permitted to drive off-road for close-up game sightings and the extensive list of alternative safari activities includes guided nature walks, night drives and hot-air ballooning, most of which are not allowed in the main reserve.

A Grumeti safari is rewarding throughout the year but at no time more so than during the Migration months of June and July when massive herds of wildebeest arrive to cross the crocodile-infested Grumeti River on their way back to Kenya’s Masai Mara. For many, however, the post-migration months of September and October are seen as the best time to visit the Grumeti Reserves: large herds of zebra and wildebeest remain in the area along with elephant, topi and Thomson’s gazelle, and it’s easy to spot predators moving through the short grass.

When it comes to a play to stay, choose between Singita’s deluxe lodges, an exclusive-use safari villa, and a mobile tented camp that follows the migration.
