we were anxious to get to the Sanctuary Gorilla Camp at Bwindi anyway. We weren’t disappointed. The 94 steps from the road to the camp were designed to get us in shape for the treks to come in search of the mountain gorillas. As usual the staff and accommodations were first rate but I do have to single out Elii. He is the epitome of Sanctuary staff. He was always there when we needed something from bringing us a cheese and fruit platter because we had missed lunch, which we mistakenly left on our deck and was promptly finished off by the local monkeys, to figuring out why Jan’s phone wouldn’t connect to the internet. He knew what we ate for breakfast and what wine...
From views of the Ngong Hills to spending three days in the Chyulu Hills, an untamed slice of Kenya between Amboseli and Tsavo National Parks. With two astonishing conservation areas on your doorstep, you can take your pick between game drives, guided walks, horseback safaris and even mountain biking. The staff at Ol Donyo, which is a member of Relais & Chateaux, will also arrange for you to meet traditional Maasai villagers and get a sense of this unique culture.
On one evening, enjoy one of Ol Donyo’s best-kept secrets: a night in their romantic ‘star beds’. Sleeping out in the open, under the shimmering Milky Way and with the rustle of far-off jackals and the occasional hoot of a content owl; this is the life.

we were anxious to get to the Sanctuary Gorilla Camp at Bwindi anyway. He knew what we ate for breakfast and what wines we wanted with dinner. Then there were the gorillas. The trekking groups are limited to 8 and once the gorillas are found we are limited to one hour of picture taking etc. It took our group a little over an hour of climbing and slogging through the mud to find our “family”. There were 4 babies, one teenager, 2 females and a very large silverback. The experience was amazing we just about wore out our cameras and all but the silverback were more than willing to entertain us. The silverback, pretty much, was just laying in some bushes nearby until he decided he had had enough, he rose up, stared at us for a few nervous moments and sauntered off into the brush just feet from where we were standing. I don’t think anyone in our group was breathing. I had a bit of a life changing experience….Jan was videoing some babies climbing in a tree nearby and I was standing just behind her watching when the teenager (about the size of a chimpanzee) came running up to me and threw his “arms” around my leg and had my entire knee in his mouth. The ranger who was accompanying us ran over and chased him away and told me “he wasn’t biting you, he was just playing”….you could’ve fooled me. The entire days experience will be talked about for years to come. The following day Jan and I joined a young lady from the local village for a walking tour to visit a pygmy group that had lived in the mountains with the gorillas until it was turned into a National Park. The government relocated them and they seem content with their new environment. We also visited a medicine man who explained how all the leaves and berries were used for medicines. We visited the local hospital, a primary school filled with the most beautiful children and a woman’s craft shop and a man who makes gin out of bananas (not great). A wonderful day.!!
Great location situated in the heart of Karen just a few minutes away from all the Nairobi attractions. Take some time to explore the lovely lush gardens and laze around the pool.
Set in the mesmerising mountains of the Kalama Conservancy with views to monolithic Mount Kenya, Saruni Samburu’s design make the most of its beautiful natural surroundings. Suites and living areas are placed in hollows and outcrops among the enormous boulders, making for a lodge that is utterly unlike any other. In addition to game viewing and birding in the Samburu Reserve, Saruni offers exciting extras like elephant safaris, expeditions to see ancient rock art, riverside picnics and bush dinners.
If you feel the need for some one-on-one pampering, make a date with the Wellbeing Space – which overlooks the Kalama Conservancy – for replenishing techniques that combine old and new.

Touch down on another airstrip carved from the African bush; this one in the Olare Motogori Conservancy in the Masai Mara. Mara Plains Camp will be your home for the next three nights and the spot where you undertake one of the best ways to truly comprehend the scale of Africa: a dawn hot-air balloon safari over the plains as the animals awake and the sun creeps up over the horizon.
Olare Motogori is considered particularly good for the chances of seeing predator action and guides here are permitted to undertake night drives, which opens the world of nocturnal animals like leopards, bushbabies, owls and bats to you. If you are travelling at the right time of year, the Masai Mara is the place to be to witness the Great Wildebeest Migration, when hundreds of thousands of these bold ungulates cross the savannah in a relentless search for fresh grazing.
From Kenya’s riches to Uganda’s treasures: it is back to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi for your flight to Entebbe in Uganda. As an under-explored travel destination, Uganda promises a never-to-be-forgotten vacation experience.
Spend the night at The Boma in Entebbe, a modern and comfortable hotel in this thriving capital. Make sure your camera batteries are charged and that your health is in tip-top condition because tomorrow you go in search of mountain gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, an emerald jewel in Uganda.
The weather in Tanzania was much more tolerable than expected, and the safaris got even better! Both Sanctuary properties were wonderful. The food was delicious, the staff was attentive and amazing, and the locations were superior. Except for the elusive cheetah, there was nothing that we missed. The number of animals in the crater was simply amazing, and even our guide was surprised when driving down to the airstrip we were confronted with 3 large lions… sooooo cool!
They say gorillas are our closest animal relatives but you never understand this fully until you come face to face with a watchful and intelligent mountain gorilla in the wild. Their expressions, gestures, grunts, moans and the way their tenderly care for their young is so humanlike that it is almost impossible not to be moved and awed. Treks out of the forest after spending an hour with these precious primates are famously silent as each trekker muses privately on this extraordinary experience.
Your abode for three nights is Gorilla Forest Camp, one of the best tented camps in Bwindi. On one day you will hike with your guides and trackers to find a habituated gorilla group and on the other visit a Batwa Pygmy village to learn more about how this tribe adapted to life in the forest.
After two weeks, it will be time to leave. Although you may be sad to bid farewell to East Africa and the end of your adventurous vacation, there will bubble up the hope and excitement that one day you will return to learn, explore and see even more.
