Overview

Showcasing two different stretches of the mighty Zambezi River, this great-value package combines the raw power of Victoria Falls with some of the best wildlife viewing in Zambia. A fly-in itinerary ensures comfort when travelling, and accommodation takes the form of luxurious suites overlooking the river. At seven days, it is perfect for couples, honeymooners and small groups of friends travelling together, but the lodges are family-friendly and so are many of the activities. It can also easily combine with a beach holiday on as well.

The experience opens at Chundukwa River Lodge, upriver from Victoria Falls. Your chalet is set under trees on the banks of the Zambezi, a beautiful living space with en suite bathroom and private views. Take advantage of a personal guide and vehicle for a tour to Victoria Falls and the area’s cultural highlights. You will also enjoy a sunset (or sunrise) river cruise and the opportunities to go on local tours ranging from white rhino tracking and horse-back safaris to white-water rafting.

Then a flight takes you downstream to the Lower Zambezi National Park and Baines’ River Camp, featuring elegant, air-conditioned cottage accommodation set on the banks of the river. Wildlife viewing is the focus here and you sit back on morning and afternoon game drives in search of the park’s classic heavyweights – elephant, buffalo, hippo, and giraffe – plus the big predators: lion, leopard, crocodile and hyena. It is also a destination that you can explore in different ways – on foot with an armed guide or you can take to the river by canoe or motorboat.

Days 1-4: The Smoke that Thunders – Victoria Falls

Victoria Falls, Zambia
Detailed breakdown

Days 1-4: The Smoke that Thunders – Victoria Falls | 3 Nights

Up arrow
Victoria Falls, Zambia

The tour opens with your arrival at Livingstone International Airport and your transfer to Chundukwa River Lodge. Lying under riverine forest along the Zambezi River, the lodge is an hour’s drive from the hustle and bustle of Victoria Falls itself, giving you the advantage of unspoilt views and birdsong as the backdrop to your stay here. Your chalet is built on stilts over the river and has its own en suite bathroom and you can catch up with news from home via the lodge’s Wi-Fi service. A private tour to Victoria Falls awaits you, and staff will be happy to arrange other activities ranging from horseback safaris, bike rides and white-water rafting to shopping expeditions and guided historical tours.

Days 4-7: A Zambezi Wilderness | 3 Nights

Up arrow
Lower Zambezi, Zambia

Your next accommodation lies far downstream: Baines’ River Camp looks out over a wide, placid Zambezi which is now a vital lifeline for the wildlife that lives in the Lower Zambezi National Park. Animal concentrations are at their highest in the long dry season, but there is excellent game viewing at any time of year and, since you are located in a private concession, you can choose to explore on foot and by boat as well as on 4X4 drives with sharp-eyed local guides. This is one of the wildest parks in the region and home to great herds of elephant, buffalo and antelope; consequently it is a great park for predators and you will be on the lookout for big cats, wild dogs and the Zambezi’s notoriously large crocodiles. Back at camp you have an enormous air-conditioned suite to relax in and great food to look forward to, not least a selection of Hummingbird Bakery Cookbook desserts.
