Romantic Botswana's Chobe & Delta
Designed with romance in mind, this 7-day journey explores Botswana’s best wildlife areas with a delightful combination of luxurious safari camps in exclusive settings.
Chobe Chilwero is located in Botswana's beautiful north, overlooking the Chobe River floodplains. Game drives and boat cruises provide superb game viewing in the Chobe National Park – home to the highest concentration of elephants in Africa and boasting impressive sightings year-round. Balancing the Chobe's riverine forest with pristine wetlands, Baines Camp is set in the heart of the Okavango Delta. Chief’s Camp provides the ideal location for exploring the Moremi Game Reserve. This legendary reserve offers unparalleled big game viewing in what is known as the ‘predator capital of Africa'.
This fly-in itinerary is ideal for seasoned travellers or first timers, and the Chobe's proximity to the iconic Victoria Falls offers a perfect safari add-on. The romance of luxurious camps and superb settings makes this tour an unforgettable honeymoon. It is also a sublime partner to an Indian Ocean island getaway.
When you book this safari, you help Go2Africa support CLAWS vital work in protecting wildlife and local communities. When you book this safari, you contribute to Go2Africa's support of the Ecoexist Project, helping local artisans bring their elephant-dung paper products to market. Your booking also aids the creation of a lookbook that promotes locally sourced crafts and food items to safari lodges, supporting small businesses in Botswana.
The staff was amazing. This room was our favorite and the bed was so huge and comfortable. The food was great. The game drives and boat rides were much more crowded here than in the other places. The landscapes were much drier also. We did get to see a very large group of lions sleeping, like 11 or 12! The Botswana Independence Day happened while we were there so there was a special BBQ on the lawn (we tried caterpillars!) and we had an interesting history lesson by the fire at night. We also had a fun boat ride on our last night on a larger boat (which had an upper deck) with lots of appetizers and drinks!
On arrival at Kasane International Airport, meet your guide for the short drive to Chobe Chilwero. Recipient of many international travel awards, this beautiful and lavish lodge enjoys commanding views over the Chobe River floodplains. Settle into the comfort of your suite before returning to the main lodge to meet your guide over a sumptuous afternoon high tea.
One of the highlights is exploring the river from a customised game viewing boat, watching the multitudes of animals in the river and along its banks. During the dry season from May to October, Chobe is home to Africa's largest population of elephants, and there is no better way to view their antics along the riverbank than from your unique vantage point in a safari boat.
In the golden light of late afternoon, the sight of these enormous creatures taking such evident pleasure in the cool water is an unforgettable experience. Old bulls stand meditatively at the water’s edge slurping solemn trunkfuls while young calves wrestle and roll in the shallows watched over by their mothers. Sometimes a herd will cross the river, and in the deeper sections only their trunks remain above the surface. Still as stones scattered along the riverbank, crocodiles bask unblinking in the last warmth of day, while great pods of hippo snort and grumble in the water.

It just kept getting better. The safaris in Botswana left me speechless. The animals were far more numerous in both Chobe and Okavango. Pretty much the same animals, but far more of them. Both lodges were very nice, and the people working there were wonderful, but a quick word about Sanctuary Baines in the Okavango Delta. Not surprisingly, there was no air conditioning, and the huts were blazing hot, (much like the heat you feel when you open your oven to smell the baked cookies that are about ready to eat)! We noticed that there was only one other younger couple staying there during our visit. They told us that there had been another party, but they insisted on a different place to stay ...
A mid-morning flight whisks you south over the Chobe's vast dry plains to the lush fingers of the Okavango Delta wetlands, a shimmering mosaic of forested islands, grassy floodplains, snaking channels and papyrus beds. Your home in the delta is the remarkable Baines Camp, nestled harmoniously in dense riverine woodland. With only five suites, this camp is exceptional and intimate with stunning features. Discover the star bath and sky bed set on your private veranda, sheltered by towering trees and offering breath-taking views of the delta by day and star-filled sky by night.
Explore the wilderness in a traditional canoe based on the mekoro used by local tribes. It is the ideal craft to navigate the narrow channels and offers a rare viewpoint for exploring this magical landscape. Glide gently through the waterways with the sound of birdsong in your ears as you encounter the myriad natural wonders around you: tiny, jewel-like frogs cling to lily stalks, kingfishers take to the air in a flash of colour, and herds of red lechwe antelope graze in shallow flooded plains.
Located in a private concession, bordering Moremi Game Reserve
Excellent game viewing
Mobile beds allow you to sleep outside under the Milky Way
Utterly romantic - bathe under the stars by candle light in an outdoor 'star bath'
Explore the Okavango Delta by traditional mokoro and motorboat, depending on seasonal water levels
Fully Inclusive (All Meals, Selected Beverages)

Both lodges were very nice, and the people working there were wonderful, but a quick word about Sanctuary Baines in the Okavango Delta. Not surprisingly, there was no air conditioning, and the huts were blazing hot, (much like the heat you feel when you open your oven to smell the baked cookies that are about ready to eat)! We noticed that there was only one other younger couple staying there during our visit. They told us that there had been another party, but they insisted on a different place to stay as they could not handle the heat. Members of the staff brought us iced towels to wrap up in, which helped, but it was a difficult situation. The day we were leaving there I felt rather sick…could have been partially from the heat, or perhaps from drinking some bad water, or a residual effect of the Malerone (Malaria medication) that I had to stop taking due to a bad reaction in Cape Town, but again the staff brought to our hut some supplies, and really made an effort to make me feel comfortable. We greatly appreciated this. This is a wonderful location and facility, but it might not be quite right for the over-65 crowd during the hot weather season. Or, some portable free-standing air conditioners might be considered.
After a final morning activity at Baines, fly to Chief’s Island in the Moremi Game Reserve. The largest island in the Okavango Delta, Chief’s Island is famed for the density and diversity of its wildlife, something that becomes apparent the moment you land. Open grasslands teem with grazing antelope and herds of giraffe tower over acacia trees, peering curiously as you drive past. Resting in the woodlands, Cape buffalo stand out, black against green, and zebra fill the air with their whistling alarm call: with such an abundance of game, predators are never far away, and this is one of the best places to find them.
Arriving at Chief's Camp, you feel a palpable sense of tranquillity. Set in a grove of towering trees and overlooking a huge floodplain, this intimate camp has a charming atmosphere. A stylish lounge, dining and bar area leads out to a secluded pool deck while the spa is tucked away down a quiet little pathway. Settle into your room and admire the view from your veranda before you prepare for the afternoon's game drive with your guide.
The diversity of habitat here makes an immediate impression – every few minutes the scenery changes: forest, grassland, wetlands. Your guide keeps an eye out for lion tracks – there is a high density here with prides swelling to 20 or more individuals, making Chief's Island a premier predator destination.
As the sun dips under the horizon, your guide selects a scenic spot for you to stretch your legs and enjoy an ice-cold gin and tonic before you return to camp with tales to share over dinner on the terrace while the lions roar regally in the distance.
After a morning drive and leisurely brunch, begin your homeward journey on a scenic flight to Maun. Soaring over the pristine wetlands of the Okavango Delta calls to mind the encounters you have had – sunset over the Chobe River with a hundred elephants at the water’s edge, exploring the wilderness, and the pure adrenaline rush of watching a lion hunt. With memories like these, a part of your heart remains in the beautiful wild places of northern Botswana.
