11-Day Rwanda Gorilla & Rhino Tracking Safari
Rwanda may be small in size, but its elevated rainforests and rolling green hills hold a significant space in the story of Africa's wildlife and people. This is a land of misty volcanoes, ancient forests and remarkable resilience – where deeply intelligent primates thrive alongside communities who continue to rebuild, heal and grow together after a difficult past.
On this 11-day journey, you'll begin in Kigali, Rwanda's vibrant capital. Here, you'll gain a sensitive understanding of the country's history and remarkable progress, with time to reflect on how far its people have come. From the city, a scenic drive carries you north into the Virunga Mountains – once home to pioneering conservationist Dian Fossey – where a world of emerald slopes, volcanic peaks and crater lakes awaits. The highlight here: an unforgettable gorilla trek through the misty forest and a day searching for playful Golden Monkeys.
The adventure continues into Akagera National Park, a lesser-known conservation triumph that borders Tanzania. Lauded as Rwanda's only Big 5 reserve, it delivers diverse wildlife encounters – from lion and elephant to hippo-filled lakes and prolific birdlife that delight beginner and experienced birders alike. As part of an ongoing rhino relocation project with South Africa, you'll also have the chance to track these remarkable animals on foot – a rare and rewarding experience that deepens your understanding of modern conservation in action. More than a quick gorilla stop, this journey works well for couples and families with older children to connect more deeply with Rwanda's nature, people and future.

Virunga was the most luxurious, as you might guess from the price. The location is great. Rooms are huge. Views are great at the very top of a hill, with lakes and mountains all around, though it tends to stay cloudy pretty much all the time. Service is very attentive. And they were nice enough to let us stay till 6 pm, as our flight left Kigali after midnight.
After breakfast at Kigali Serena, you'll meet your driver and set off on a scenic road transfer north towards Volcanoes National Park. The journey winds through Rwanda's lush hills, with views of terraced farms, villages and the distant volcanic peaks that define this iconic landscape. Your base for the next four nights is Virunga Lodge, perched high on a hill with breathtaking 360-degree views of the surrounding extinct volcanoes, shimmering lakes and the patchwork fields of rural Rwanda. Settle into your cosy ‘banda', complete with all the comforts you need and a private terrace perfect for soaking in the vistas.
The next morning brings one of Africa's most unforgettable experiences – your first gorilla trek. After an early breakfast and detailed briefing, you'll head into Volcanoes National Park to track a habituated gorilla family. Spend a magical hour observing them as they forage, play and interact – always under careful guidance and strict protocols. Return to the lodge to rest tired muscles, swap stories at the bar, or simply relax next to a log fire and take in the mountain scenery.
The next day, venture back into the misty forests, this time for a lively Golden Monkey trek. These playful primates are a delight to watch as they chatter and leap through the branches. Your final day at Virunga is yours to explore at your own pace – consider a hike to the grave of famed primatologist Dian Fossey or tackle one of the volcanic summits for panoramic views of the surrounding misty landscapes.
