If your luck is in, you may even spot a herd of elephants crossing the river, the adults protecting the little ones while the leader finds the safest passage.

In the late afternoon, revive with a classic high tea – the table laden with dainty cakes and pop-in-your-mouth savouries – or a perfectly-mixed G ‘n T in The Lounge to the accompaniment of live piano music. The atmosphere is redolent of David Livingstone’s adventures in Africa, with hand-painted maps marking his intrepid journey.

The Royal Livingstone Dining Room is a perfect bookend to your day; glimpse impala or zebras wandering past the windows as you tuck into breakfast, lunch or dinner. The à la carte menu effortlessly fuses European classics with notes of Africa and India. A must-have is the Zambezi bream, oven-roasted whole with just a touch of salt and pepper.
