5-Day Mozambique's Wilderness: Gorongosa Restoration Project Safari
Set your sights on Gorongosa National Park, Mozambique's extraordinary triumph of ecological restoration. Thanks to remarkable conservation efforts, this once war-torn region has reclaimed its former majesty as one of the planet's most biodiverse havens.
Tucked away in a remote corner of reserve, your safari features canvas-tented suites, beginning with two nights at Muzimu Lodge and culminating in a three-night stay at Chicari Camp. The landscape around you ripples from vast floodplains and open grasslands to rainforest-clad mountains and lush wetlands, each teeming with remarkable wildlife.
Elephants rumble along the plains with their lumbering gait. In the woodlands, African wild dogs bound effortlessly in their packs, while suni antelope hide among the forest's thick undergrowth. Scientists, local guides, and nearby communities bear witness to nature's resilience and Mozambique's enduring commitment to restoring hundreds of species of wildlife to the region.
This itinerary is tailored for discerning travellers with an appreciation for knowledge as well as a thirst for nonstop action. Your days are filled with game drives, walking safaris, and educational retreats that provide a personal encounter with Gorongosa. Cycling sojourns offer serene moments in nature, while sundowners provide the perfect ending to each day.
When I chose Mozambique and the Gorongosa area it was based on seeing the Greg Clark 60 Minutes’ documentary. I can now say that the experience was well beyond my expectations. First, the land in the Gorongosa area is beautiful and varied. The Muzimu Tented Camp was first rate in the accommodations, food preparation, guides and total staff. My family was able to see many different wildlife as well as other experiences such as visiting the main camp with its research labs and visiting a beautiful waterfall going through towns and seeing all the children greeting us with waving hands and excitement.
After many trips to Africa, I will recommend that you can and should put Mozamb...
Upon arrival at Beira International Airport, a charter flight will whisk you to Chitengo Airstrip for your first two nights in a boutique tented suite at Muzimu Lodge. After settling in, a late-afternoon game drive offers a private glimpse of the park's iconic landscapes, with no other vehicles in sight. Sunset vistas are accompanied by light snacks and the clinking of wine glasses, before returning to camp for gourmet dining beneath a blanket of stars.
The sunrise greets you with a rejuvenated spirit, as birdsong and grasses whisper in the breeze, heralding your first full day on safari. After a leisurely breakfast, venture beyond the park to visit local communities, where thriving empowerment and sustainability projects are the cornerstone of the Gorongosa Restoration Project's humanitarian efforts. Return to camp for a tranquil stroll or cycle around the grounds, building an appetite for lunch on the quiet sanctuary of the main deck.
As the afternoon ebbs, you set out on your second game drive at Muzimu, venturing deeper into the park in search of waterbuck congregating near the wetlands. The drive continues into the park's dense woodlands, where you may catch glimpses of elusive nocturnal birds, nightjars and owls, hidden among the treetops. After dinner, savour a nightcap by the dying embers of the firepit.

Thank you once again for a very special memorable family trip.
A full day steeped in safari adventure awaits. Set out at dawn on a game drive into the park's most remote corners in search of elusive wildlife. Sip on aromatic brews in a clearing soaking in the morning sun. After breakfast, tread the wild alongside expert local guides, embracing a slower pace to marvel at the finer details of the bush. Pause for a picnic beneath the dappled shade of trees, before continuing to Chicari Camp for three nights.
Day four is dedicated to discovery. Begin with a morning safari that brings you face-to-face with the Pangolin Guardians, walking alongside rescued pangolins as you learn their stories. These walks form a crucial part of the pangolins’ rehabilitation process to allow them to forage safely, build up strength, and acclimate to the environment until they're ready to go off on their own.
Continue to the E.O. Wilson Science Laboratories—the first facility of its kind in Africa—where you'll gain insight into biodiversity research, ecology, and conservation biology.
On your last full day in Gorongosa, choose between a game drive or walking safari before returning for a leisurely lunch of flavourful dishes. Spend the early afternoon unwinding in the tented lounge, spotting quiet creatures strolling the floodplains, then set out for your last game drive. As the sun dips beyond the horizon, sundowners mark a bittersweet close to your Gorongosa adventure.
