With good planning and advance booking, it is possible to have a memorable value-for-money safari in Africa that takes in three of the continent’s most exciting areas. This 9-day itinerary has been tailor-made especially for first-timers or those with a modest budget in mind.

Your time in Africa starts in Kenya, a beautiful country known for rolling savannah, plenty of predator action, intense red sunsets and friendly Masai guides and rangers. Your introduction to safari is in the unique Nairobi National Park before you move on to the splendid Masai Mara National Reserve.

After five days seeking out elephant, lion, zebra, cheetah and myriad other species, you fly into Zambia to see the country’s flagship natural spectacle: the incomparable Victoria Falls. Itinerary

Day to day

‘Jambo’ means ‘hello’ in Swahili and you might soon be saying it automatically to everyone you meet as the spirit of Kenya overtakes you. After landing at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, you will be met and transferred to Nairobi Tented Camp, a charming set up in the heart of Nairobi National Park.

The park, which is home to all of the Big 5 except elephants, is one of the few places in the world where you can do an authentic game drive just miles from the modern city centre. If you are really fortunate, you may even get to take the iconic shot of reticulated giraffes with Nairobi’s high-rise buildings in the far-off distance.

A night at Nairobi Tented Camp is the perfect way to settle into safari. Depending on your schedule, you may have time for late afternoon or early morning game drives. Enjoy moments around the crackling campfire and get used to the nocturnal sounds of the bush – the singing of nightjars, the calling of hyenas, the roaring of distant lions – before the next part of your journey.

The perfect combination of a big 5 safari and ticking off Victoria Falls. Lion Porini with its low carbon footprint offers so much more than game drives, head out on foot with the Masai to explore the region in depth and enjoy night game drives all in a crowd free region of the Mara. Chundukwa at the Falls is an excellent value lodge right on the river but with easy access to the Falls, the ideal way to unwind after being on safari.
