Overview

Discover the ultimate combination of a safari and island escape, all within Malawi's diverse landscapes. Your journey begins in Mejete Wildlife Reserve at Mkulumadzi for an intimate, isolated experience. Relax and unwind amidst true wilderness and venture out into a private concession with expert guides. Each moment spent away from the lodge promises adventure and excitement, while the luxury camp offers rejuvenation and first-class facilities, ideal for the start of your trip.

From there, the colonial leg of your trip begins at the exceptionally beautiful Satemwa Tea Estates. The esteemed Huntingdon House will be your home-away-from-home while you enjoy picturesque scenery, lawn games, tea tastings, and even a tour of the coffee factory. There may not be any safari-style wildlife viewing, but a prolific aviary population ensure some sightings during your stay.

Bid the plantations farewell and transfer to the Shire River and on to Kuthengo Camp. Spend the afternoon relaxing in the pool or on your private deck before beginning your exploration of the lauded Liwonde National Park. Game drives, walking safaris, and boating safaris ensure your time here is adventure-filled with equal time for rest and respite.

Leave Kuthengo Camp behind in favour of the idyllic, warm waters of Lake Malawi. Mumbo Island Camp promises rustic, but lovely lake view chalets with an enticing array of water-based activities. This is the perfect opportunity to take your tour into your own hands – idle by the pool, take a meander around the island, discover hidden beaches, and enjoy sublime sunsets.

The island dream continues following your transfer to Nankoma Island, an unspoiled paradise protected by Lake Malawi National Park. As with your time at Mumbo Island Camp, your stay at Pumulani Lake Lodge invites you to tailor-make your stay. Enjoy a variety of watersports, explore the island on foot, or simply relax by the infinity pool and on your private deck.

Enjoy one final activity in Majete Wildlife Reserve before your transfer to the spectacular Satemwa Tea Estates. For the next two nights, Huntingdon House will be your host.

Embrace old world luxury and play croquet and badminton on the lawn or take a guided walk around the estates. Guests would be remiss to leave without a tea tasting – sample a selection of teas with a comprehensive explanation of the full process from your guide. Despite being a tea-focused estate, Satemwa has also grown coffee since the 70's, and in-season guided walks are not only scenic, but incredibly interesting.

Keep your bird book on hand as the estate is home to a seemingly endless array of aviary species, including the endangered Thyolo Alethe. For the adventurous at heart, take a day trip to Mount Mulanje, the third highest free-standing peak in Africa, and do some hiking. Before you leave, be sure to take a trip to the picnic spot for sundowners and sensational views over the estate.

In the evenings, enjoy a tea or coffee-based cocktail in front of the fire and a delicious home cooked meal before retiring to your unique suite – each room has its own story, so find out more about yours before departing.

On arrival, settle into your room and spend a few hours at leisure before your first game drive into the incredible Liwonde National Park. Your first evening promises and enticing al fresco dinner and fireside stories before a good night's rest.

Whichever you choose, keep an eye out for resident wildlife such as sable and roan antelope, impala, and buffalo.
