Change a Life Bwindi is a grassroots Ugandan NGO supporting Batwa and Bakiga communities living alongside Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Their work equips households with conservation-linked enterprises, such as beekeeping, crafts, and now mushroom cultivation, to replace poaching income and reduce pressure on one of Africa's most biodiverse forests. With land scarce and cash-generating options limited, these initiatives provide vital alternatives that connect community livelihoods with forest conservation.

With Go2Africa's support, $16,000 has been invested in a mushroom farming project that introduces a high-value crop thriving indoors. Built with CoolBrick technology, compressed earth blocks with near-zero carbon footprint and natural insulation, the mushroom house requires minimal space, making it ideal for rural families with limited farmland.

The unit will be managed by Batwa and Bakiga women, providing new employment opportunities in communities where education and economic options are limited. Fresh harvests will supply Erebero Hills Lodge, which has adopted a farm-to-fork approach, while surplus produce will be dried and sold locally, creating diverse and reliable income streams.

This initiative not only boosts household income but also strengthens the link between intact forests and community prosperity, advancing both conservation and livelihoods. Looking ahead, an additional $30,000 will be invested in further needs identified by Asilia Bwindi, continuing to unlock the value of natural capital and support profitable, regenerative agriculture.
