Good-Value Migration, Crater & Zanzibar
Proving that experience is not confined by budget, this 11-day tour delivers a high-quality safari and beach holiday without breaking the bank. Perfect for couples and honeymooners as well as first-time safari travellers, the itinerary makes use of local flights rather than road transfers, giving you more time to relax and explore at your destinations.
Beginning with an easy night at a riverside lodge outside Arusha, the first part of the tour combines Tanzania’s must-see Ngorongoro Crater and Serengeti National Park, giving you the chance to tick off the Big 5 along with massed herds of migrating wildebeest and zebra. Your Ngorongoro accommodation lies close to the crater rim itself, allowing for spectacular views, while your Serengeti lodge is a mobile affair that sets up in different locations in the path of the Wildebeest Migration to guarantee you front-row seats to the action.
Then it is time to swap the golden grasslands of the Serengeti for the golden sand of Zanzibar's north-west coast where you enjoy four nights at a secluded spa resort. Equally at ease offering diving and snorkelling tours as well as pampering massages and yoga classes, Hideaway at Nungwi Resort & Spa is the ideal place to wind down after a week on safari.
When you book this safari Go2Africa will donate $5 to the VETA Hotel and Tourism Training Institute to support the annual sponsorship of two students.
The Arusha Coffee Lodge was the perfect place to land. I am so glad we stayed there. It was so comfortable, beautiful and is a truly special place. I hope I have the opportunity to stay there again!
A night at the Arusha Coffee Lodge marks the start of your Tanzanian travels. Sip on the freshest ‘cuppa’ you are likely to find anywhere, under the comforting gaze of Mount Meru. You spend the night in a plush Plantation Room, set amid the lush green bushes, their branches studded with red coffee berries.
Take a walk through the coffee plantation, learn more about the beverage on the Bean to Cup tour, or have a spa treatment at Peaberries. The accommodating staff can also arrange tours to Arusha National Park and Ngorongoro Crater, as well as to Maasai markets and Arusha’s other highlights.
Ideal overnight stay just 5 minutes from Arusha Airport
Spacious suites surrounded by coffee plantations
Relaxed, serene atmosphere & lovely outdoor restaurant
Dining area, bar, shop & swimming pool

The weather in Tanzania was much more tolerable than expected, and the safaris got even better! Both Sanctuary properties were wonderful. The food was delicious, the staff was attentive and amazing, and the locations were superior. Except for the elusive cheetah, there was nothing that we missed. The number of animals in the crater was simply amazing, and even our guide was surprised when driving down to the airstrip we were confronted with 3 large lions… sooooo cool!
Returning to Arusha after breakfast at Arusha Coffee Lodge, you catch a scheduled flight to the Manyara Airstrip and a road transfer to the simple but comfortable Ngorongoro Crater Camp. Set in a shady forest close to the crater rim itself, this authentic tented camp has easy access into the Crater. You begin with an afternoon drive on the crater floor, followed by a full-day safari the next day.
The world’s largest intact volcanic caldera, this steep-sided Crater is home to the densest concentration of large animals in Africa and has built its reputation on peerless Big 5 game viewing: look out for elephant, rhino, buffalo, lion and leopard. Back at camp you have a classic tented suite to return to, complete with private bathroom with hot-water bucket shower, as well as home-cooked meals served under the stars.

In the Serengeti not only did we find much of the North-South migration, but we caught 2 major river crossings and one crocodile take-down…although I learned that you should definitely be careful of what you wish for, as that was hard to see. A flight from the Manyara Airstrip to the Serengeti means you have time to settle into your new camp before heading out to explore. Kichakani Serengeti Camp specialises in the Wildebeest Migration, moving easily between three different locations to ensure its guests enjoy grandstand views of the action, whether it is the massed herds on the move, the spectacular birthing season or the raw drama of the river crossings.
There is always a great deal else to see on your game drives – abundant plains game and, of course, predators ranging from big cats and wild dogs to hyenas and crocodiles. Morning and afternoon game drives with expert guides take you into the heart of the action. And by the way, our guide, Filbert, was also a photographer, and he helped me get some extraordinary photos using my cell phone with his binoculars.
Zuri was very nice, but because of the size, we did not get to meet too many staff members by name. The only one we can remember is Jan who is one of the managers. On our first night, Melanie was not feeling great and had to leave the restaurant. I was held up trying to sign for the bill. Jan saw that Melanie was not doing great, so she walked her to the room and kept her company while I signed the check. He was very kind and interested in her heart transplant story.
A scheduled charter flight takes you from the Serengeti savannah and into the island of Zanzibar. There may be a few stops on the way at other lodges, but before long, you can let your bags hit the floor of your air-conditioned suite and stretch your legs on a powder-soft beach. Set on the island’s idyllic eastern coast, Zuri Zanzibar Hotel & Resort blends privacy, relaxation and adventure in equal portions, allowing its guests to do as much or as little as they like.
The resort offers scuba diving and snorkelling trips as well as pampering massages, beauty treatments, yoga sessions and a gym. Sunset dhow (traditional sailboat) cruises and fishing trips are available to book at the resort, while the hotel’s Spice Garden is the ideal spot for a stroll. Tours of Stone Town make for an excellent cultural and historical experience, while the short spice tour imparts insight into why Zanzibar is known as the Spice Island.
