Okavango Delta, Chobe River & Victoria Falls
Per Person Sharing
8 days
Spend eight fantastic and memorable days exploring Botswana’s two iconic safari destinations – the Okavango Delta and Chobe National Park – before ending off with a stay at the mighty Victoria Falls in Zambia.
Begin your getaway in the Okavango Delta by going on game drives and traditional mokoro trips. Move on to the border of the Chobe National Park, a famous conservation area packed with big game and home to many predators. There are also plenty of opportunities for keen bird enthusiasts to tick off dozens of bird species.
Lastly, head to the banks of the Zambezi River which will be the base from where you will explore one of the seven wonders of the world – Victoria Falls, also known as the adrenalin capital of Africa. Here you can enjoy all the big thrills of the region – thrilling helicopter rides, and sunset river cruises are among the most popular activities.
It just kept getting better. The safaris in Botswana left me speechless. The animals were far more numerous in both Chobe and Okavango. Pretty much the same animals, but far more of them. Both lodges were very nice, and the people working there were wonderful, but a quick word about Sanctuary Baines in the Okavango Delta. Not surprisingly, there was no air conditioning, and the huts were blazing hot, (much like the heat you feel when you open your oven to smell the baked cookies that are about ready to eat)! We noticed that there was only one other younger couple staying there during our visit. They told us that there had been another party, but they insisted on a different place to stay ...
Arrive at Johannesburg’s OR Tambo International Airport today and catch your connecting flight to Maun Airport. From here you will transfer into the Okavango Delta to your accommodation – Sanctuary Baines’ Camp – for the first three nights.
This intimate tented camp is sheltered among a forest of ebony and sausage trees. Each stilted tent is delicately decorated to provide a luxurious but understated elegance featuring a romantic outdoor bathtub and a four poster bed which can be wheeled out onto the deck for a night under the stars!
This region of Botswana is home to a wide variety of big game including elephant, buffalo (it's actually one of the best places to see buffalo), giraffe, hippo, lion, leopard and Africa's endangered painted wolf, wild dog.
The many wild creatures inhabiting this land can be discovered in a multitude of ways. There are game drives conducted in open 4×4 vehicles when the area's water level permits it, and by mokoro or motorised boat when it doesn't. Walking safaris are also offered, with passionate guides eager to share their knowledge.

They told us that there had been another party, but they insisted on a different place to stay as they could not handle the heat. Members of the staff brought us iced towels to wrap up in, which helped, but it was a difficult situation. The day we were leaving there I felt rather sick…could have been partially from the heat, or perhaps from drinking some bad water, or a residual effect of the Malerone (Malaria medication) that I had to stop taking due to a bad reaction in Cape Town, but again the staff brought to our hut some supplies, and really made an effort to make me feel comfortable. We greatly appreciated this. This is a wonderful location and facility, but it might not be quite right for the over-65 crowd during the hot weather season. Or, some portable free-standing air conditioners might be considered.
The staff was amazing. This room was our favorite and the bed was so huge and comfortable. The food was great. The game drives and boat rides were much more crowded here than in the other places. The landscapes were much drier also. We did get to see a very large group of lions sleeping, like 11 or 12! The Botswana Independence Day happened while we were there so there was a special BBQ on the lawn (we tried caterpillars!) and we had an interesting history lesson by the fire at night. We also had a fun boat ride on our last night on a larger boat (which had an upper deck) with lots of appetizers and drinks!
Today you will leave Sanctuary Baines’ Camp after breakfast and transfer to your next accommodation, set on a escarpment overlooking the Chobe River and the world-renowned Chobe National Park: the elegant Chobe Chilwero. This beautiful and luxuriously appointed lodge boasts exceptional river views and breathtaking sunsets, best enjoyed while on a peaceful riverboat cruise.
Chobe National Park is of course known for its exceptional game viewing and bird watching, and you’ll be heading out on morning and afternoon game drives with expert guides in search of Chobe’s legendary elephant and buffalo herds. The game viewing is particularly good in the June to October dry season. For something more relaxing however, you can also enjoy a pampering spa treatment at Chobe Chilwero’s well-equipped spa.
