Wild Horizons & Victoria Falls Wildlife Trust
Wild Horizons’ and the Victoria Falls Wildlife Trust's commitment to environmental sustainability shines brightly through its introduction of alternative energy sources in rural communities. Recognising the detrimental impact of deforestation on both local habitats and global ecosystems, the organization has championed the adoption of biogas digesters. In areas where trees are being indiscriminately felled for firewood, these digesters offer a beacon of hope. By harnessing readily available resources such as domestic animal dung and water, the biogas digester provides a renewable energy solution that mitigates the need for further deforestation.
Zimbabwe’s struggle with electricity shortages has exacerbated the reliance on firewood, accelerating the rate of deforestation. With hundreds of thousands of hectares lost annually, the country faces significant environmental challenges. However, the biogas digester stands as a powerful antidote to this destructive trend. Not only does it offer a sustainable energy alternative, but it also addresses the root causes of deforestation by reducing the demand for wood fuel. Through initiatives like this investment in biogas technology, communities are empowered to break free from environmentally harmful practices while improving their quality of life. Go2Africa is committed to purchasing 1 digester a month for the local community this year.
The impact of Wild Horizons’ biogas initiative extends far beyond conservation and protecting wildlife corridors; it’s a catalyst for positive change on multiple fronts. Beyond preserving precious ecosystems and wildlife habitats, the adoption of biogas technology fosters resilience in rural communities. By providing a reliable source of energy for cooking and heating, it enhances livelihoods. The gas produced from one stove can be used to prepare food to feed about 10 to 20 individuals at any given time.
Moreover, as fewer trees are felled, the carbon footprint shrinks, contributing to the global fight against climate change. Through innovation and collaboration, Wild Horizons & the Victoria Falls Wildlife Trust are helping to set standards of how sustainable solutions can drive positive change for wildlife, communities and the environment.
Victoria Falls Wildlife Trust, since its inception in 2008, has been dedicated to an array of impactful conservation efforts. Beyond their renowned rescue, rehabilitation, and release of wildlife harmed by human activities, they engage in cutting-edge wildlife research to uncover scientific solutions for long-term conservation. Additionally, they are deeply involved in community outreach, striving to find sustainable solutions that enable harmonious coexistence between local communities and wildlife. These comprehensive efforts underscore their commitment to preserving biodiversity and promoting ecological balance.
