Kenya's Samburu, Mara & Seychelles
This is the life: a fortnight filled with prime game viewing in two unique reserves and then a beach break on a private bay and island in the Seychelles before heading home. With time spent in Samburu National Reserve and a private conservancy in the Masai Mara in Kenya, followed by the unbeatable islands of the Seychelles, you could be forgiven for thinking you have found heaven.
There is unique magic and wonder at each stop, from the arid, rocky ledges of Samburu and the rolling plains of the Masai Mara to the azure waters and the palm-dotted, white sandy beaches of Seychelles' Mahé Island and Denis Private Island. On safari, spot the Samburu Special 5 (Beisa oryx, reticulated giraffe, Grevy's zebra, gerenuk antelope and Somali ostrich), which are endemic to the area, and bask in the incredible wildness of the unchanging rhythms of East Africa.
Then jet off to the tropical island paradise of the Seychelles, where you split six nights between Mahé, the largest of the Seychelles islands and the international gateway to this sun-soaked archipelago, and Denis Private Island. Explore the tropical coastlines on a kayak, a traditional dhow sailing boat, stand up paddle board, or dive in to experience the marine life snorkelling or scuba diving.

Saruni Samburu was an amazing lodge. Unfortunately, the terrain was difficult for me to navigate. I had a very hard time getting around. We were scheduled for Villa 6A, but there was no way I was going to be able to get there (that’s as far as you can get from the main area; very difficult for anyone with mobility issues). So, Nicole (the lodge manager) very kindly switched us to Villa 2 and then the next day let us move to the family villa. There, they were able to come pick me up in the jeep right in front of the villa. Also, they brought the massage bed to the villa because I wasn’t able to get to the wellness building. Today is a good day for an adventure among the rocky cliffs of the Kalama Conservancy, far removed from roads, buildings or crowds of people. After breakfast at Ololo, a driver will take you to Wilson Airport for your scheduled light aircraft flight to Saruni Samburu.
On arrival, sit on your deck or cool down in the swimming pool while watching elephant, giraffe and zebra are drink from the resident waterhole. Saruni Samburu is a breath-taking property that is spread out at altitude, with ample distances between communal areas, the rooms, the spa, the swimming pools and reception – making it an ideal lodge if you're looking for some privacy.
As well as the Samburu National Reserve's herds of elephant, expect to see lion, leopard and cheetah and the Samburu Special 5: the Beisa oryx, reticulated giraffe, Grevy's zebra, gerenuk antelope and Somali ostrich.
You can also discover the traditions and way of life of the Samburu people, unchanged for generations, with Saruni's local guides. The lodge is especially welcoming for children and the guides will teach them bush lore, perhaps how to make a traditional bow and arrow or a toothbrush from the ‘toothbrush tree'.
Built into and around a giant volcanic rock face with unbelievable views
Nature walks with excellent Samburu guides
Interesting Samburu rock art and cultural interactions
Excellent bird watching and photography from the private hide by a waterhole
Riverside picnics and bush dinners (by arrangement)
'Warriors' programme for children
Fully inclusive safari with complimentary 30-minute massage

Nicole went way out of her way to accommodate my disability and I really appreciate it. Hussen was our main waiter and Jimmy was our driver/guide. Both were very helpful and kind. Even with my mobility issues, I’m glad we got to stay at Saruni Samburu Lodge.
Lewa Wildernesses is stunning and I wish I had stayed 3 nights there also. That and the Saruni Mara are definitely my favorite. However, seeing and understanding Samburu and the effect of climate change and drought on the people and animals was extremely important to me. I am figuring out how I can get more involved with getting accessible water.
All of the camps were absolutely amazing and the staff at all go above and beyond! I met some people I will forever be friends with after sharing this experience with them. Traveling alone is a completely different experience and I formed bonds with people quickly and deeply.
Bid farewell to the spectacular Samburu and head back to the airstrip for an air transfer to the Masai Mara. Stay at Saruni Mara, in the Mara North Conservancy on the northern edge of the mighty Masai Mara. This is the alluring land of the Great Migration and the lodge is perched above the rolling plains, a perfect look-out point for game watching.
Enjoy exciting game drives with morning coffee stops and evening sundowners. Be sure to go on guided walks; the Masaai guides know where to find the best stories and you may even catch sight of an elusive leopard slumbering the boughs of a tree. Included in this trip is an early morning hot-air balloon safari, a serene and unmissable experience and the most incredible way to spot the reserve's abundant wildlife.
After a hard day's adventure, relax the Maasai Wellbeing Space, a well-appointed spa offering a combination of Western and local Maasai treatments.
Excellent year-round game viewing
Private Masai Mara conservancy
Perfect for the Wildebeest Migration season
Day and night game drives as well as walking safaris
