Best Proposal Destinations in Africa

The emotions your loved one feels when you ask them such a defining and important question – ‘Will you marry me?' – can be overwhelming to the point of tears, laughter and weak knees, exactly the sort of emotions that are worthy of an utterly romantic setting.

Africa has long been home to rich and diverse romantic traditions. These range from chilled cocktails served beside a river bank bathed in the majestic colours of sunset, to crystal and silverware laid out for a private dinner under the stars; from a 4-poster bed draped in mosquito netting and dressed in the purest luxury bed linen right up to matchless honeymoon safaris. Welcome the dawn with sunrises over the Serengeti, or unwind in private pools overlooking the Mara for a truly enchanting celebration of your union.

Romantic Africa is the serenade of a nightjar singing softly in the darkness and the balance of thrills and tranquillity you experience on safari. We think this continent is simply made for unforgettable marriage proposals! Here are our top 5 places in Africa to pop the question:

South Africa

1. The Best Places To Propose in South Africa

South Africa is not only vast, but varied – from the hustle and bustle of Cape Town and the wild wonder of Kruger National Park to the peaceful Garden Route and up into its safari destinations.

Discover the Most Romantic Proposal Spots in Cape Town

Does it get more romantic than on top of one of the World's 7 Natural Wonders?  Table Mountain is the beautiful backdrop of Africa's culinary capital, the cosmopolitan city of Cape Town. The views from the top are spectacular – a panorama that takes in the Atlantic Ocean, the Cape Winelands, the dramatic folds of the Twelve Apostles mountain range and the bustling City Bowl. It truly is a breathtaking view overlooking the tip of Africa.

For a truly romantic proposal, head up the revolving cable car with a gourmet picnic basket and a bottle or two of the Cape's best sparkling wines. We predict tears of joy as you toast to ‘making it official'!

Cape Town is also famous for having some of South Africa's best beaches, from the penguins at Boulders Beach to the white powder-soft sand of Camps Bay. Propose as the sun hits the horizon and the sky explodes into a vibrant sea of colour or celebrate in the sandy cove of Llandudno – ironically, a popular spot for romantic beach weddings.

Lauded as one of South Africa's most popular wildlife destinations, the Kruger offers couples a vast array of camps, lodges, and private villas to choose from. Venture out on sunrise game drives, guided walks, and enjoy sundowners in the bush – if there was ever a time to get down on one knee, this is it.

Often when picturing safaris in South Africa, the go-to is Kruger National Park, but many forget about its private reserves. As the area that pioneered luxury safaris, it's no surprise that its private reserves feature some sensational 5-star camps and lodges, complete with award-winning cuisine and first class game viewing.

Talk to one of our experts about the likes of Sabi Sands, Thornybush Private Game Reserve, Timbavati, and Kapama before making your decision as some will be better suited to your proposal plans than others.

Popular Places To Propose in The Garden Route

The Western Cape's Garden Route stretches along the coast, officially starting in Mossel Bay and continuing to Storms River, but it's a popular drive from Cape Town. Make your way through the winelands and the Cape's French corner, Franschhoek, and over Sir Lowry's Pass to begin your romantic road trip.

Stops along the way should include the likes of Wilderness, Knysna, and Plettenberg Bay, before you continue through Tsitsikamma National Park and Storms River. Propose on the Storms River suspension bridge or perhaps following an adrenaline-inducing bungy jump off the Bloukrans Bridge – Africa's highest bungy experience. Stay in quaint or luxurious accommodations along the way and take the journey at your own pace.

Alternatively, allow everything to be handled for you and simply enjoy quality time together with a Garden Route tour compiled by one of our Africa Safari Experts.

2. The Most Romantic Island & Beach Proposal Destinations

The tiny islands and atolls that dot Africa's coastline like so many idyllic little Edens are tailor-made for the dreamiest, most romantic proposals. Africa's private islands are found in the exotic islands of Seychelles and clustered in pristine archipelagos off Mozambique‘s north coast.

A private island vacation is probably one of the best places to pop the question – you could be horseback riding along a deserted beach, dining on fresh seafood as the sun spills over the ocean or clinking champagne glasses while the warm ocean laps your toes. You'll fall in love all over again!

Most Romantic Spots To Get Engaged in Seychelles

Wake to the gentle bristling of palm trees and the rhythmic beat of the ocean as waves hit the shore before venturing out to explore the idyllic island paradise of Seychelles. Venture to the likes of Mahé Island, Praslin, La Digue, or perhaps even Cousin or Denis Private Islands for the epitome of exclusivity.
Make the most of picturesque islands, a romantic boat charter, or a candlelit dinner on powder-soft sand. Ask the all-important question during an exquisite island sunset, on a private stretch of beach, or even after an unforgettable snorkelling experience. Following an elated “Yes!”, spend the remainder of your time enjoying local cuisine, diving amongst a diverse array of marine life, and exploring World Heritage Sites.

Alternatively, save tropical island destinations for a honeymoon in Seychelles instead and pick one of the other magical places in Africa for your engagement.

Mozambique: A Hidden Gem Amongst Proposal Destinations

Considering where to propose in Africa? While most consider the Cape when they think of beach proposals, or one of the Indian Ocean Islands, pristine white sands are closer than you think. Mozambique is undoubtedly one of Africa's best-kept secrets and combines the best of other tropical destinations, such as Seychelles or Mauritius, without the same crowds.

While the mainland features beautiful beaches, swaying palms and national parks, the likes of Benguerra Island and the Bazaruto Archipelago offer the epitome of ‘barefoot luxury'. Given its flagship conservation area, Gorongosa National Park, and proximity to some of Africa's favourite safari spots, Mozambique also makes for a fantastic safari and beach honeymoon destination.

Victoria Falls

3. Best Places To Propose in Victoria Falls

Much like witnessing the sheer potency of a roaring lion at twilight, visiting Victoria Falls is a pinnacle experience on a Southern Africa safari. It's a destination with so much history and old-world glamour surrounding truly majestic natural beauty, whether you experience it from a riverside terrace sipping a gin & tonic, or from the heights of a spray-strewn microlight flight. It is gift-wrapped luxury and adrenalin-fuelled adventure in one spectacular package.

Suffice to say, it's a great place to pop the question, whether you choose a private boat cruise on the Zambezi River, or overlook the thundering falls in the midst of a flurry of rainbows. Victoria Falls is the perfect conclusion to a romantic safari in Botswana or South Africa, and a suitably dramatic setting for a proposal.

Whether you decide to stay on the Zimbabwean or Zambian side, there are ample tours to Victoria Falls to ensure the perfect proposal backdrop.

Where Is the Best Place To Propose in Zimbabwe?

To eliminate the obvious first, overlooking the thundering falls would be a spectacular spot and there are plenty to choose from. Should you wish to venture slightly further into the Zimbabwean side for a safari adventure, we recommend a sojourn in their flagship reserve, Hwange National Park. As it's fairly close, it could also be a lovely ‘post proposal' celebration for a few days. Venture out on guided safari walks, track white rhino, and various game drives – including night drives.

In addition to, or instead of if you're short on time, visit Mana Pools National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. While it also offers fantastic wildlife sightings and walking safaris, Mana Pools also offers unforgettable canoe safaris – watch as elephants wade into the water while you glide downstream and keep an eye of Africa's infamous Big 5. It's also one of the best places to find African wild dogs.

For returning safari-goers, make unforgettable proposal memories in lesser-known destinations such as Matusadona National Park, Matobo National Park, or even Gonarezhou National Park. Their remote settings promise fewer visitors and an exhilarating sense of adventure while also curating an undeniably romantic setting fit for asking that all important question.

While general locales are important, so are the places you choose to stay – fortunately, Zimbabwe is brimming with luxury lodges and camps. The teams at these accommodations are almost always willing to lend a hand in planning the perfect surprise so don't be afraid to ask for their help and advice.

Where Is the Best Place To Propose in Zambia?

Picture a more perfect proposal | Thorntree River Lodge

On the other side of Victoria Falls is the wonderful Zambia. While both countries have access to the vast waterfall, the Zambian side also features two exhilarating activities perfect for adrenaline junkies and adventurers – walk Knife-Edge Bridge during high-water season along the precipice above the gorge or visit Devil's Pool, a natural rock pool on the very edge of the waterfall. Ride the high and sink down onto one knee for the ultimate adrenaline rush.

When it comes to safaris, Zambia has some heavy-hitters, including the birthplace of the walking safari, South Luangwa National Park. As Zambia's premier wildlife destinations, South Luangwa is home to a vast array of wildlife and incredible accommodations. Step into the wilderness on a walking safari that spans  a few hours, or perhaps several days, with nights spent under uninterrupted skies alive with stars. While a multi-day trek may not appeal to every couple, there are some whose eyes come alight with the idea of walking amongst wildlife and discovering the intricacies of the bush with their partner.

Nothing says romance quite like a serene sunset cruise along the Zambezi River, spotting wildlife along the shores while sipping on champagne. Sunsets in Africa are an experience unto themselves and set the scene for a truly special proposal.

East Africa

4. Popular Places To Propose in East Africa

Much like its southern counterpart, East Africa is an alluring mix of bustling cities and breath-taking wild landscapes. Whether you answer the call of the sprawling Serengeti, the magic of the Masai Mara, the peace of a private island, or even the grumble of gorillas, East Africa offers ample places for your perfect proposal.

Where To Propose in Tanzania

A wonderful aerial view | Govenor’s Camp

If any place screams safari, it's Tanzania. From the iconic Great Wildebeest Migration, to the Big 5 in lauded destinations, fascinating hidden gems, and even beachside bliss – though many save the beach for their Zanzibar honeymoon.

One of the most popular proposal ideas, and for good reason, is a hot air balloon safari. Picture it; launch just before sunrise and watch as the land lights up in a golden glow, witness wildlife wake for a new day, and take in the vast, awe-inspiring open plains. Soak in the sights and propose with a champagne breakfast upon landing, or while high in the sky overlooking the world together.

The best places to get airborne is over the Serengeti and Masai Mara eco-system – a vast network of grasslands, migratory paths and wild rivers – a place largely untouched by man and time.

For a different perspective, venture to an ancient volcanic caldera with one of the highest densities of wildlife in the world, the Ngorongoro Crater. Its varied ecosystem and diverse landscapes supports a huge number of large game, antelope and predators, and is considered home to one of the densest lion populations. Amid all that natural beauty, we think it's also a perfect spot to pop the question!

If remote wonderlands are more your speed, venture to Rubondo Island in Lake Victoria for the ultimate romantic escape. As Rubondo Island Camp is the only accommodation found on the island, you can be assured of exclusivity, tranquillity, and a sense of magic. Spend time cruising along the lake, on game drives, guided nature walks, and even tracking chimps – all of which lend themselves to a surprise proposal.

Hidden Gems: The Best Places in Kenya To Propose

While Kenya also offers visitors a chance to witness the Great Migration as the herds charge through the Masai Mara, there are also ample hidden gems ideal for a romantic getaway.

Vibrant, white sand and water sports await at Diani Beach where Africa meets tropical island-style romance. Snorkel amongst a host of sea life, including whale sharks and even giant manta rays, charter a yacht, and soak in the sunsets. A wonderfully romantic spot to say “Yes!” and enjoy the beachside bliss. For a more traditional approach, the famous Ali Barbour's Cave Restaurant in Diani Beach offers candlelit romance in an ancient cave with views up to the star-lit sky.

For your dream safari experience in Kenya, visit Lewa Wildlife Conservancy and pose your question while leaving a positive impact. Not only is the area known for its community-based conservation and anti-poaching efforts, it also offers the Big 5, enchanting woodlands, and far-reaching grasslands.

Wondering Where To Propose in Uganda?

Venture into the forests together | Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp

For our adventurous couples, consider an experiential proposal in The Pearl of Africa, Uganda. Not only does the country offer some of Africa's premier wildlife destinations, such as Queen Elizabeth National Park, but perhaps most notably its gorillas.

Step foot into Uganda's rainforests and embark on a once-in-a-lifetime gorilla trekking expedition. While that's not to say you can never do it again, no two encounters will ever be identical, making it the ultimate proposal plan. Discover the depths of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park and Mgahinga National Park to uncover its mountain gorillas.

Stay in one of the many luxurious lodges and camps, enjoy some unique wildlife experiences, like Uganda's tree-climbing lions, and greet the wonderful locals, all of which will make your proposal adventure truly unforgettable.

Safari Destinations

5. The Best Places To Propose While on Safari

For many travellers, a vacation is all about leaving the daily grind far behind to explore new landscapes and savour new flavours. A truly off-the-beaten-track setting is quite unforgettable for a marriage proposal – whether it is in the remote Busanga Plains of Kafue National Park in Zambia, deep in the heart of the Kalahari Desert or exploring the papyrus-lined waterways of the Okavango Delta.

A wilderness escape is the perfect antidote to our endless schedules and stressful city lifestyles. In addition to buckets of tranquillity, the best thing about Africa's remote spaces is the lavish comforts waiting for you there. From walking safaris to game drives, river boating and canoeing, exploring a wild landscape with the one you love sets a very romantic scene for the ultimate proposal.

Wondering Where To Propose in Africa? Botswana Is the Answer

Four-poster star bed magic | Sanctuary Baines’ Camp

While many will automatically picture the kaleidoscopic wonder of the Okavango Delta, Botswana has other exciting attractions up its sleeve for potential proposals.

Beginning with the beauty of the Okavango, nothing quite compares to a traditional mokoro (dugout canoe) excursion, winding peacefully along the water, encountering wildlife along the shores. At sunset this is even more special. There are also wonderful opportunities for hot air balloon safaris or a flip in a helicopter – an ideal opportunity to pop the question with a bird's eye view of the delta.

Botswana is also home to two safari giants, Chobe National Park and Moremi Game Reserve, as well as the smaller Savuti and Moremi Game Reserves. Discover one of the world's largest elephants herds in Chobe, spot leopards in Moremi, or seek out Savuti's lions – whatever your preference, Botswana has the answer.

Rated as one of the best luxury African safari destinations, Botswana has also become known for its exceptional accommodation. From opulent ‘glamping' and facilities that rival hotels to private plunge pools and outdoor bathtubs, the perfect place exists for you and your loved one. Better yet, book a lodge that features one of Africa's iconic star beds and spend a night under the stars, which is arguably one of the most intimate and romantic ways to propose; just you and the wild heart of Africa, and the stars as your witnesses.

Propose in Kafue National Park

Romance abounds on safari | Ila Safari Lodge

For seasoned safari-goers and return travellers, the enticingly wild and remote heart of Kafue National Park beckons. Although it's Zambia's largest conservation area, it's less frequented due to its more remote locale and its sheer size. So while you may spend a little longer getting there, its limited number of camps and lodges means there's a good possibility of not seeing even one other game vehicle during your time here.

Kafue's Busanga floodplains are a veritable hotspot for wildlife, including the leaping lions that hop to and fro over the floodplains. The area is known as predator paradise and offers some incredible sightings around the floodplains, Nanzhila Plains, and the woodlands. Keep in mind that due to the floodplains, most of the properties close for the wet summer months (November to April) so plan your proposal accordingly.

Opt to pop the question on a romantic game drive for two, on a spectacular walking safari, or at your accommodation of choice. Fortunately, Kafue's top camps and lodges are also equipped with solar powered and electric vehicles, meaning wildlife is less spooked and you have more chance to ask the all-important question without the rumble of a diesel engine.
